The Riviera , also known as "The Riv", was a hotel and casino complex on the Strip in Las Vegas . It had 2100 hotel rooms, most of them in a 23-story building. The casino area extended over 10,000 m². The complex was demolished in June (Monaco Tower) and August (Monte Carlo Tower) in two separate demolitions. The property is now owned by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), which will build additional buildings for trade fairs and congresses on the area.
history
The Riviera opened on April 20, 1955 as the first major casino and ninth resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The Riviera set new architectural standards: previously, hotels on the Strip were built like large motels. A group of investors from Miami ( Florida ) built in the complex. Over the course of time, the hotel changed hands several times, and for some time the operators were said to be close to La Cosa Nostra . After his success at Flamingo Las Vegas , which he had taken over in 1947 after the death of Bugsy Siegel , Gus Greenbaum was convinced by Anthony Accardo and Jake Guzik to take control of the Riviera as well, as it had lost five million US dollars by then had produced. On December 3, 1958, Greenbaum and his wife were murdered. In addition to disagreements in his management, his refusal to sell his shares, which Meyer Lansky wanted to bring under control , also played a role . In the casinos it was also customary to give artists smaller shares in the casinos; Harpo and Gummo Marx also had minority stakes at the opening , and Dean Martin had a small stake when he appeared in the casino's theater as the main attraction. Even Liberace occurred early in the connected theater.
Splash , a traditional revue , ended in 2006 after many years of performance at the Riviera. On April 6, 2006 the company was to be taken over by Riv Acquisition Holdings, an investment group led by real estate experts Neil Bluhm, Barry Sternlicht, Paul Kanavos and Scott Butera (group president). However, the offer of $ 17 per share was rejected by shareholders on August 29th. The company has gone bankrupt several times in the course of its history, most recently in 2010.
On May 4th 2015 the Riviera was closed after 60 years of existence. It was the oldest casino on the Strip at the time. The erotic show Crazy Girls , which has been shown in the hotel since 1987 , is continued in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino . Also known is bronze - sculpture showing the artists of the show, are situated there. On June 14, 2016, the first part of the hotel was deliberately blown up.
