Austin Powers - The Sharpest Her Majesty has to offer (Original title: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery ) from 1997 is a parody of James Bond . The script was written by Canadian comedian Mike Myers , who also played two leading roles. Directed by Jay Roach . The film opened in German cinemas on November 20, 1997.

action

London in the middle of the " Swinging Sixties ". Secret agent Austin Danger Powers has made it his business to protect the world from his adversary Dr. Evil to protect. Since Dr. Evil feels harassed by Austin Powers, he escapes with a rocket into orbit . Austin Powers freezes and waits for his archenemy in this state. Thirty years later the time has come: Dr. Evil returns to Earth, and Austin Powers is reanimated by the Secret Service. However, Austin Powers has not only worked with Dr. Evil to fight, but also with the changed society in the 1990s.

background

According to Mike Myers, the idea for the film came when he was listening to the oldie "The Look of Love" on the car radio on a lonely Canadian country road. The song was written by Burt Bacharach for the film Casino Royale  (1967). Myers remembered watching the wondrous spy films of the 1960s with his father on television as a child and thought to himself, "I want to be in a film like this". So it should come, including Burt Bacharach cameo and "The Look of Love" in its own score. With his band Ming Tea , Myers can be seen as a singer in the credits.

The first Austin Powers film was initially a flop in the cinema, but was still a hit thanks to video and TV exploitation. Due to the successful reference to the first James Bond films , playing with secret service clichés, freedom of movement in the sense of the "swinging sixties" and weird humor, the film achieved cult status. It was followed by two successful sequels.

Allusions

The film can be seen as a parody of the James Bond films, with Mike Myers as Austin Powers for 007 on the one hand and as Dr. Evil for the James Bond villain Blofeld. The German title Das Schärfsten What Her Majesty has to offer and Austin Power's normal clothing allude to the James Bond part on Her Majesty's Secret Service . The casino scene in Las Vegas , on the other hand, refers to the movie Fireball . Furthermore, numerous references are made to typical characteristics of the early James Bond films, such as the "Bond, James Bond", which Myers overemphasizes with an "Austin Danger Powers".

Further allusions and parodies:

  • Dr. Evil is based on the actor Donald Pleasence , who played Blofeld in You Only Live twice .
  • The split-screen technique comes from the film Thomas Crown is beyond belief .
  • The scene in which Austin is thawed and wakes up again after the warm slime phase is an allusion to the alien from the movie Alien - The uncanny creature from an alien world when it breaks out of the astronaut.
  • The subsequent scene with the cleaning phase comes from the film James Bond - 007 is Dr. No .
  • Dr. Evil's method of killing employees who have failed with the push of a button using a prepared chair comes from the movie Fireball .
  • The embodiment of the minions Randomtask by Dr. Evil is a parody of the James Bond character Oddjob from Goldfinger .
  • Number two is modeled after the figure Emilio Largo from Fireball .
  • The scene in which Number Two uses a USA map with models to explain what the Virtucon company owns is from the movie Diamond Fever .
  • The scene in which Austin visits Alotta Fagina in her penthouse is also made of diamond fever .
  • The whirlpool scene is from In the Face of Death . In the course of this scene Alotta says "In Japan the man comes first and the woman comes later". A similar formulation occurs in You Only Live twice , also there in a whirlpool scene.
  • The outfits of Dr. Evil's armies are modeled on those from Diamond Fever .
  • The radiation protection suit that Dr. Evil wears towards the end, reminiscent of Dr. No , in which Dr. No is wearing a very similar suit.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews, earning a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 60 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 51, based on 25 reviews, could be achieved.

“A humorous parody of the flower power generation and the zeitgeist that is opposed to it today, which serves almost every kind of humor, from jokes to macabre jokes to satirical tips. Thanks to the overwhelming flood of quotes and exuberant actors, a largely carefree pleasure. "

“Seldom has it been clearer than with this film how much a comedy depends on precise timing. The script is teeming with weird ideas, but director Jay Roach's sloppy production lets at least half of all gags implode ineffectively. And most of the rumors that are likely to cause cackling in prudish America only find a weary echo in the yawning throat of the viewer in this country. After all: between all the gunfire there are ( sic ) a couple of diaphragmatic attacks that are simply adorable. For example, if Austin in Dr. Evils Doomsday Laboratory guest star Christian Slater is hypnotized, is that really ... uh ... groovy! "
