Charles Napier (actor)
Charles L. Napier (born April 12, 1936 in Scottsville , Allen County , Kentucky - † October 5, 2011 in Bakersfield , California ) was an American actor and voice actor . He has appeared in well over 100 films and television series.
Life and accomplishments
Napier was first used in the 11th Airborne Division of the US Army before he became an actor. He made his debut in 1969 on the television series Starship Enterprise ; he played his first significant role in the film Cherry, Harry & Raquel! (1970) by Russ Meyer . He also appeared in Russ Meyer's film Flowers Without Scent (1970). He became famous for the lead role in the Russ Meyer film Supervixens - Eruption (1975). One of his favorite directors was Jonathan Demme, with whom he made five films. In the thriller Deadly Embrace (1979) by Jonathan Demme Napier played a bigger role alongside Roy Scheider and Christopher Walken . This was followed by the role of a secret service agent in the worldwide hit Rambo II - The Order (1985, alongside Sylvester Stallone ) and in the crime comedy Dangerous Girlfriend (1986, alongside Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith ) by Jonathan Demme that of a chef and restaurant owner who had been cheated out of his money. He also played in Demme's comedy The Mafiosi Bride . A year later, Demme began shooting the film that would become his greatest success: The thriller The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Here Napier played the police officer Sergeant Pembry , who is murdered by Hannibal Lecter ( Anthony Hopkins ) before he escapes. In Demme's film Philadelphia (1993) he was seen as the sovereign judge Garnett , in which Andrew Beckett ( Tom Hanks ), supported by Joe Miller ( Denzel Washington ), fights for his rights. Napier played some leading roles in lesser known films such as Alien Species - The Night of the Invasion (1996) or DinoCroc (2004).
Charles Napier was married to Delores "Dee" Wilson for the second time. He died on October 5, 2011 at the age of 75.
