Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American musician. She is a member of the band The Bangles , which celebrated great success in the charts, especially between 1986 and 1989.

Life

Susanna Hoffs is the daughter of screenwriter and director Tamar Simon-Hoffs . In 1993 she married the film producer and director Jay Roach , with whom she has two sons (* 1995, 1998).

Her first film role was in the musical Stony Island directed by Andrew Davis in 1978 , for which her mother had written the script.

She started her music career in 1981 as a singer and guitarist with the music group The Bangles. After the initially modest success of the first album All Over the Place (1984), the group was to achieve international success from spring 1986 with the album Different Light and titles such as Manic Monday , Walk Like an Egyptian and Eternal Flame .

After the Bangles broke up in autumn 1989, Susanna Hoffs began a solo career.

In early 1991 the album When You're a Boy was released , from which the first single My Side of the Bed was the best. However, all other publications fell short of expectations.

In the autumn of 1996 the second album was released, which was simply called Susanna Hoffs , but could not build on the success of the group phase either.

In addition, she was in smaller film roles such as B. The Allnighter (1987).

Since the group reunited in 1999, Susanna Hoffs has released two new albums with the Bangles and plays concerts with the group regularly.

In April 2006, Hoffs released the album Under the Covers Vol. 1 with Matthew Sweet , which contains a selection of personal favorite songs from the 1960s. In July 2009 this collaboration with songs from the 1970s was continued on the album Under the Covers Vol. 2 .

In the summer of 2012, Hoffs' solo album Someday was released , which in turn forms a musical link to the music of the 1960s. In November 2013, the third album together with Matthew Sweet was released. It is titled Under the Covers Vol. 3 and contains cover versions of tracks from the 1980s.

On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2020 a tribute concert for Prince took place on January 28, 2020 in the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles under the motto "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince", at which Hoffs performed the song Manic with Chris Martin Monday sang. The concert aired on U.S. television on April 21, 2020, the fourth anniversary of Prince's death.
