The Bangles ( english The Bangles ) is an American pop band that in 1981 in Los Angeles , California was founded. Her biggest hits were Manic Monday (1985), Walk Like an Egyptian (1986) and Eternal Flame (1989).

history

1981–1983: First steps

In early 1981 the sisters Vicki and Debbi Peterson placed a newspaper advertisement to find another member for a band , whereupon Susanna Hoffs got in touch. The three favored the music of the 1960s , called their newly formed group "The Bangs" and performed in clubs in the Los Angeles area. They also recorded a single called Getting Out of Hand and gained local notoriety.

In 1982 bassist Annette Zilinskas joined the group. Together they released the 12 ″ single Bangles in mid-1982 . Zilinskas stayed in the band for a year and was then replaced by Michael Steele , who had been with The Runaways until 1975 .

1984–1987: The breakthrough

In 1984, The Bangles signed a contract with the music label Columbia Records and released their debut album All Over the Place in May of the same year . The singles Hero Takes a Fall and Going Down to Liverpool were unsuccessful from a commercial point of view.

In early 1986, The Bangles released their second studio album, Different Light , which led to the band's national and international commercial breakthrough. Four successful singles were released from the album; Manic Monday (composed by Christopher, a pseudonym of Prince ), If She Knew What She Wants , Walk Like an Egyptian and Walking Down Your Street .

1988–1989: climax and separation

In early 1988, The Bangles reached number 2 on the US charts with a cover version of the Simon & Garfunkel classic Hazy Shade of Winter . Tour stress and artistic differences led to tensions within the band. In addition, the fixation of the public on Susanna Hoffs caused discontent among the members of the band; Although each band member wrote songs and sometimes took on the lead vocals, Hoffs was mostly in the foreground when taking photos. This made it look like she was the band leader of The Bangles.

Nevertheless, the band released their third studio album called Everything in the fall of 1988 . The first single In Your Room became another top 5 hit in the US, but the second single, Eternal Flame , released in spring 1989, became The Bangles' most commercially successful single. But after the world tour, the band split up, which Hoffs officially announced in autumn 1989 at a press conference.

1999–2003: Reunion and comeback

In the following years the band members kept in contact with each other and in February 1999 - after ten years - they recorded a song together again. They contributed the piece Get the Girl for the soundtrack of the film Austin Powers - Spy in a secret missionary position . This was followed by a joint appearance in June 1999 at the Beatles Tribute Concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and in September 2000 The Bangles went on tour for the first time since 1989 .

In March 2003, the comeback album Doll Revolution was finally released , which, together with the single Something That You Said, was best known in Germany, where The Bangles featured it on the TV show Wetten, dass ..? presented.

Since 2005: Further appearances and publications

The Bangles (2012)

In April 2005, bassist Michael Steele announced her departure from The Bangles. The band then continued to give regular live concerts in the founding line-up with Susanna Hoffs, Vicky and Debbi Peterson, but mainly in the USA. In August 2007 the first live DVD with the title Return to Bangleonia - Live in Concert was released . The DVD contains a concert from 2000 that The Bangles gave at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

On September 27, 2011, the fifth studio album called Sweetheart of the Sun was released . On November 27, 2014, the album Ladies and Gentlemen… The Bangles! , a compilation of early releases, demos and live recordings by the band. The album was only released as a download version.
