Rate Your Music, or RYM ( English for Rate Your Music ), is a free, member-built, online database of phonograms and recordings , record labels and films . It was founded in 2000 and is based in Seattle .

structure

Rate Your Music was founded on December 24th, 2000 by Hossein Sharifi. In contrast to Discogs , the focus in the beginning was not on electronic , but on rock music . The basic principle of the site is to allow users to enter albums , singles and EPs into the database and then rate them. The rating system ranges from a minimum of half a star to a maximum of five stars. Rate Your Music is similar to a wiki in that all data (artists, recordings and artist biographies) are entered jointly by registered users; however, they must be viewed and approved by a moderator in order to prevent vandalism . Nevertheless, the database suffers from considerable inaccuracies and duplicate entries. On the one hand, musicians and their associated bands are grouped together under the name of the solo artist (e.g. Bruce Springsteen), or the front musician and his accompanying band (e.g. Udo Lindenberg) are listed separately.

RYM 1.0, the first version of the site, made it possible to rate and catalog music recordings, write reviews, create lists and add artist names and albums to the database. Other functionality was gradually added, such as the introduction of user forums in 2002. On August 7, 2006, RYM 2.0 was introduced, a completely new version of the website, which offers additional functionalities such as entering track lists, labels, catalog numbers, concerts or Venues, bot.

Due to high operating costs, Rate Your Music has not only been financed by user donations since 2006, but also receives income from other sources. Specifically, these are commission-based links to online music services and contextual advertisements from Google AdSense (which registered users can switch off). This step was previously discussed in the user forums. A democratic vote on it did not take place.

In May 2009 Rate Your Music started adding films to its database.

"Custom Charts" and music recommendations

A special function at RYM are the so-called custom charts . These are numerical compilations of ranking lists of the various recordings and films in the database, whereby the user can open these ranking lists individually according to any criteria. In this way, the works with the highest, but also those with the lowest ratings can be sorted by year, decade, format or country. The album with the best ratings on the global all-time leaderboard is Radioheads OK Computer (January 2011).

In addition, a user can recommend films, artists or recordings to any other user. There is also an automatic function that gives the user new recommendations based on the ratings they have already given.

Problem

Although Rate Your Music was founded as a database and likes to see itself as such, the nature of the site goes far beyond the neutral collection of data. The fact that the main focus of the site is on the evaluation of sound carriers does not make dealing with certain database entries easy. Entries about Adolf Hitler and other criminals of the Nazi regime led to heated discussions within the forum and even to demonstrative withdrawals. In fact, Rate Your Music is used by supporters of the Nazi ideology as a playground to spread right-wing extremist ideas in music and to trivialize them. However, as can be seen in the link, these theses are also controversially discussed there.
