Social cataloging

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Social cataloging is collaborative, open cataloging with the help of web-based literature management programs . In contrast to the collective cataloging by librarians in a union catalog , each user of a social cataloging system manages his own collection of literature references; References to the same books, articles or other publications are linked so that it can be seen within the system which users have a particular publication in their collection.

If only references are managed, one also speaks of social bookmarking . Most social cataloging systems allow, among other things, the free allocation of keywords (tags); this aspect is called social tagging (community indexing).

Common systems for social cataloging include BibSonomy , LibraryThing , literaturedb , CiteULike , Connotea and Goodreads . With other reference management programs, the linking of entries from different users is also considered.
