action

The democratic deputies Cam Brady wants the poll in North Carolina a row for the fifth time in the Congress are elected. However, his campaign is marred by the discovery of an affair with one of his followers who comes out after he accidentally leaves a sexually suggestive message on a local family's answering machine.

Two corrupt businessmen, Glen and Wade Motch, took this opportunity to convince Marty Huggins, director of the Hammond City Tourist Office and son of one of their associates, Raymond Huggins, to take on Cam for the Republicans . Cam initially underestimates Marty and humiliates him by showing a video biography about his naive life so far. The Motch brothers then hire Tim Wattley as Marty's campaign manager. He manages to present Marty in public as a successful politician and family man. Marty's polls also go up significantly with his new campaign, while Cam's continues to drop when he tries to hit Marty but hits a baby. Cam later runs commercials portraying Marty as an al-Qaeda terrorist, while Marty exposes Cam as a false Christian when he misrepresents the Our Father . Cam tries to restore his religious image in public by visiting a snake handler church, but is bitten by a snake. A video of the bite ends up on the Internet, causing Cam's poll ratings to drop even further.

When Cam's son tries to run for the office of class representative, Cam finds that he is a bad role model for him and visits Marty to make peace. Marty begins to get Cam drunk, whereupon Cam tells him that he became a politician to help the people. For example, he tells of a story when he was a child and, as a class representative, had an old rusty climbing frame removed from the playground. After Cam leaves, Marty is persuaded by Tim to call the police and blackmail Cam for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for this and his popularity continued to decline. When Marty airs a commercial calling Cam's son Marty "Dad", Cam takes revenge on Marty by seducing Marty's neglected wife, Mitzi, secretly recording sexual intercourse with her, and broadcasting it as a campaign commercial. The released video humiliates the Huggins family and leads Cam's campaign manager, Mitch, to leave him, believing that Cam has gone too far with the sex tape. Marty retaliates when he shoots Cam in the leg while on a hunting trip, increasing Marty's own popularity.

As the election date approaches, Marty meets with the Motch brothers and learns of their plans to sell Hammond to their Chinese business partners and turn the city into a cluster of factories. Marty notices that he has only been used and refuses any further support from the brothers. In order to still be able to implement their plans, they offer their support to the cam, which is far behind at the time. Meanwhile, Marty is reconciled with his family again.

On election day, Cam's victory seems to be a sure bet until Marty promises in a last minute commercial that he will become the most honest MP if he is elected. He also reveals the Motch brothers' plan and announces further missteps from Cam's previous life. In the end, Cam wins and remains a member of Congress because the voting machines were manipulated by the Motch brothers. While Cam is partying, Marty shows him the large scars he left in an accident on the rusty jungle gym and says that he looked up at him at school after removing the jungle gym. Cam then realizes how far he has strayed from his true motivations as a politician and does not accept the election as Congressman. So Marty finally wins the election. With his resignation, Cam has regained respect and the two agree to work together again later. Marty also appoints Cam as his chief of staff.

Six months later, Marty and Cam uncover the Motch brothers' machinations and summon them to a hearing on a committee of inquiry in Congress led by Marty. The two brothers note that everything they did, according to the judgment in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is legal. They are eventually arrested because they had ties to Tim Wattley, the campaign manager and an internationally wanted refugee.
