Daniel Edward Aykroyd , CM (born July 1, 1952 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian film actor , screenwriter and singer . He became internationally known in the 1980s through comedies such as Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters .

life and career

Aykroyd studied criminology and sociology at Carleton University in Ottawa . Here he first appeared in a student theater. In 1972 he appeared in a series of 15-minute comedy shows on a cable broadcaster. Here he was already the author and producer of his skits .

Aykroyd became known to a larger audience when he and other actors founded the television series Saturday Night Live on NBC . Many performers started their careers here. Dan Aykroyd also worked with John Belushi , with whom he formed the Blues Brothers Band . This was followed by three joint LPs and a successful tour. The following film, the Blues Brothers , directed by John Landis , was his biggest hit. He also made films with other colleagues from Saturday Night Live , such as Bill Murray , Chevy Chase and Eddie Murphy . With Bill Murray he was in Ghostbusters - Die Geisterjäger (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989) to see. The 2009 video game Ghostbusters: The Video Game is, according to Aykroyd, "essentially the third film".

Dan Aykroyd did not only appear in film comedies. His range of roles also included melodramas such as Miss Daisy and her Chauffeur , period films ( Haus Bellomont ), youth films ( My Girl ) and suspense films such as Undercover Cops . In 1990 he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Miss Daisy and Her Chauffeur , which was named Best Picture.

His only directorial work was Valkenvania - The Wonderful World of Madness from 1991. Aykroyd has appeared in television series (including PSI Factor ) and also worked as a film producer in recent years . He only takes on supporting roles in movies, including playing Britney Spears' father in Not a Girl . He also appeared in four episodes as a supporting role in James Belushi's sitcom Jim Again and again . His German dubbing voice was mostly that of Thomas Danneberg .

Aykroyd is also the initiator and owner of Crystal Head Vodka.

Private life

Dan Aykroyd has been married to Donna Dixon since 1983 and has three daughters: Danielle (* 1989), Belle (* 1993) and Stella (* 1998). He was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome at the age of twelve and Asperger's syndrome in the early 1980s . He attributes his enthusiasm for ghosts to the latter.
