The New York student Paul Tannek is considered a loser. He befriends his colleague Dora Diamond, who has a secret relationship with her professor Edward Alcott. Tannek finds Dora passed out after a party. Suspecting a drug overdose as the cause, he takes Dora to the hospital. There he learns that she has named Professor Alcott on her ID as the person who should be notified in the event of an accident. Dora moves in with her professor and hopes that their relationship will be made public, but that doesn't happen. After a falling out with her professor, she finally finds shelter with Paul.
Professor Alcott is meanwhile being blackmailed by Paul's colleagues for knowing about the relationship. They hope this will give them better grades. Professor Alcott erroneously assumes that Paul also belongs to this circle. Dora is disappointed in Paul. Only later does she find out that Paul did not blackmail the professor and that he gave him a bad grade, which endangers Paul's scholarship. Dora finally ends the relationship with her professor and finds herself with Paul via detours. The professor is allowed to go to prison for this.
