action

40-year-old Rosie is a television producer and the single mother of 14-year-old daughter Izzie. Her husband had left her because of a younger woman and is now mad about youth himself, which is why he dresses like a teenager and constantly undergoes new cosmetic operations. Her daughter is lovesick because her classmate Dylan doesn't care about her. Her secretary Jeannie tries to piss off Rosie behind her back at every opportunity. When her TV series, the soap opera You Go Girl , loses ratings , her boss Marty decides that she should remove all controversial topics from the series. In search of a new actor for the series, she hosts a casting in which 29-year-old Adam is selected. She responds to Adam's advances and agrees to meet him on a date one evening , both of which do not initially state their correct age. Rosie initially claims to be 37 years old and Adam claims his age to be 32. An affair develops from the meeting . Rosie has problems with the actual age difference between the two, but Adam doesn't see it as a problem.

Rosie's secretary Jeannie, who tries to blame Adam for an affair with actress Brianna, arouses jealousy in Rosie through deceitful actions. One day, Marty explains to her that her series You Go Girl will be canceled and that she will lose her job. Instead, the program managers plan to broadcast a new sitcom called The Shizzle on the vacant slot, with Adam as the lead actor. However, Adam insists that the entire former You Go Girl writing team work on the new show. Marty then calls Rosie and offers her to take over the editor-in-chief of The Shizzle . Rosie initially declines the offer. Only when she finds out about Jeannie's intrigues and realizes that Adam actually never had anything with Brianna does she accept the offer for the new job. Rosie and Adam are finally happy together and daughter Izzie ends up getting together with her classmate Dylan.

background

The main thing in love was shot in Los Angeles , at the Westridge School in Pasadena and in London . Filming began on 1 August 2005 and ended on 11 November 2005. The cost of production was around 24 million US dollars estimated. The film grossed around $ 9.6 million in cinemas worldwide.

The film was only shown in theaters in a few countries; the first cinema release took place in Spain on May 11, 2007. On June 15, 2007, it was screened at the Maui Film Festival . In the USA the film was released on DVD on February 26, 2008 , in Germany it was marketed as a direct-to-DVD production and was released on December 11, 2008.

The unusually low number of cinema screenings can be attributed to conflicts of interest of various parties. Director and screenwriter Amy Heckerling counted her experiences on the project as one of the most frustrated in her entire 26-year career. So she explained that she had to spend weeks looking for crazy scenes that the film studio had lost. She primarily blamed the problems with the Bauer Martinez Entertainment film studio for the failure of the cinema release. Farmer Martinez planned to distribute the film himself, but was unsuccessful. When MGM agreed to take over the distribution of the film, they wanted to cut costs and demanded that Michelle Pfeiffer's fee be renegotiated. Martinez persuaded Pfeiffer to push her fee to $ 1 million, which she would receive in advance of 15% of gross earnings. MGM resisted, however, and did not want to accept that Pfeiffer would already receive money if the studio had not yet made a profit itself. Despite positive test screenings, MGM postponed the release of the film, and Pfeiffer was planning to start an advertising campaign on the same day. In January 2007, the deal with MGM fell through and the Bauer Martinez company had accumulated US $ 100 million in debt, which made it impossible to sell it on its own. There were, however, numerous interested studios - but when they found out that Bauer Martinez had already sold the rights for free TV and DVD publication to The Weinstein Company , the interested studios withdrew. There was no longer any interest in acquiring the distribution rights, which are only limited to theatrical release. Finally, the independent studio Freestyle Releasing was found , which was planning a release in 1,200 US cinemas for autumn 2007 with financial support from Blue Rider Pictures . This plan also failed, with Blue Rider Pictures blaming Pfeiffer and Pfeiffer again making it clear that Martinez had already given up on theatrical release and that there wasn't enough money for advertising anyway. Eventually The Weinstein Company exercised the rights to DVD release and theatrical release was buried with it.

In addition to Henry Winkler , who plays himself, a number of British and Irish comedians also have guest appearances, including David Mitchell , Mackenzie Crook , Graham Norton and Ed Byrne .

Norm MacDonald was originally intended to be Rosie's ex-husband, Nathan. He said he had a bushy mustache for his role, which he was supposed to shave off again at Amy Heckerling's request, whereupon he left the film project. The role was eventually given to Jon Lovitz .

Michelle Pfeiffer's character is 40 years old in the film, while the actress was 47 years old at the time of filming. Paul Rudd was 36 years old and played a 29-year-old actor in the film. Stacey Dash, who plays a teenage actress in the film, was 40 years old at the time of filming.

On August 30, 2005, while filming with Michelle Pfeiffer in London , a luxury Range Rover valued at around US $ 90,000 was stolen from the Camden Town film set .

The English original title I Could Never Be Your Woman is also a line from the music title Your Woman by White Town , which was used in a scene in the film. Various pop musicians can also be heard in the film's soundtrack.

In the original English is heard as Rosie at the sight of the thin Barbie are stacked dolls of daughter naked, says, " it looks like a concentration camp " (dt. "Looks like in a concentration camp " ). In the German dubbing you can hear "Somehow something horrible" .

criticism

The lexicon of the international film judges that the main thing in love is a "refreshing romantic comedy that moves pleasantly outside the beaten track, sets nice punch lines and brings a reunion with Michelle Pfeiffer within a good-humored ensemble."

Cinema sums up that the film is “not completely round, but thanks to Rudd and Pfeiffer and nice biting blows on the youth craze it is charming fun. Conclusion: Nothing for botox fans : danger of laugh lines ! "
