Jonathan Michael "Jon" Lovitz (born July 21, 1957 in Tarzana , California ) is an American comedian , actor and singer .

Life

Lovitz studied acting and theater at the University of California, Irvine , where he joined the comedy group The Groundlings . From 1985 to 1990 he appeared as an ensemble member on the television show Saturday Night Live , for which he was nominated for an Emmy in 1986 and 1987 .

In the mid-1980s, Lovitz began starring in film comedies. He starred alongside Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger in My Stepmother is an Alien (1988) , and alongside James Belushi in Mr. Destiny (1990) . He played a supporting role in Loaded Weapon 1 (1993) and starred in High School High (1996) alongside Tia Carrere . Lovitz took on a serious role in Todd Solondz 's 1998 ensemble film Happiness ; he played a depressed and deeply neurotic character.

In the animated series The Critic , Lovitz lent his voice to the main character Jay Sherman, who was also optically modeled on him. The series ran in 1994 and 1995; between 2000 and 2001, 10 more episodes of the series were produced. In a crossover episode of The Simpsons , Lovitz was also seen as Jay Sherman in Springfield.

From 1998 to 1999 he played in the television series NewsRadio . In the series Las Vegas Lovitz played a recurring role and from 2012 a leading role in the series Mr. Box Office . In addition, Lovitz appeared on several television series and sitcoms as a guest, including Friends , Two and a Half Men , Seinfeld, and A Terribly Nice Family .

Lovitz also appeared again and again as a stand-up comedian and on Broadway .
