A power-hungry despot named Tod Spengo has usurped control of a distant planet mostly inhabited by idiots. In order to satisfy his megalomania, he wants to destroy the earth with a new super laser, but when he looks through the target eyepiece beforehand, he sees the earth woman Marge Nelson and falls in love with her on the spot. When she and her husband Dick are on their annual honeymoon, Spengo kidnaps the car and its occupants. He woos Marge fiercely, but in vain, as the two spouses are still true to each other despite their current marital crisis. When an attempt to read from Dick's mind why Marge loves him like no other fails, Spengo has him unceremoniously thrown into jail.

After some difficulty, Dick manages to escape from his cell and meets Raff, the rightful ruler of the planet, who is also a prisoner of Spengos. He sends him into the desert to lead the resistance fighters around his son Sirk and his daughter Semage. Dick just barely made it out of the palace into the desert, made contact with the rebels and established himself - despite his lack of military skills and the rather poor armament of the rebels - as their leader in overthrowing Spengo. At the same time, Marge also receives support: General Afir, the commander-in-chief of Spengo's army, has had enough of his master's eccentricity and promises her his help; but both are caught by Spengo. He then condemns Afir to become the first victim of the super laser the very next day, together with the earth, immediately after he married Marge.

With the help of some diversionary maneuvers and Spengo's ego, Dick and the rebels manage to smuggle themselves into the palace and at the crucial moment begin the fight for the liberation of the planet. After a sword fight, Spengo falls victim to a horde of native parasites and Marge is freed. Raff's reign is restored, and Marge and Dick return to earth with a thoroughly cemented relationship and some memorable travel souvenirs.

Reviews

Rita Kempley wrote in the Washington Post on July 25, 1992 that there were 2001 reasons not to see the film. The most important reason is that the film is " stupid " (" dumb ").
