action

season 1

Jessica Day is a teacher who was betrayed by her fiancé Spencer and therefore leaves him and their apartment. She finds a new apartment and ends up with the three bachelors Nick Miller, Schmidt and Coach, the latter moving out later. Winston Bishop, who previously worked as a professional basketball player in Latvia for two years, moves in.

Nick has also had a difficult breakup from his long-term relationship with Caroline, but it was difficult for him to get over it. He has various fleeting relationships over the course of the first season. Jess also has new relationships, but they break up because of different views on the state of the relationship. Jess' best friend Cece starts an affair with Schmidt, but refuses to admit her feelings. Schmidt goes on a date with one of Cece's roommates and breaks his penis . In the hospital, Cece Schmidt finally confesses her feelings. Nick meets up with his ex Caroline again, despite emphasizing in an earlier video of himself that he is never allowed to be with Caroline again. Nevertheless, he signs a lease with Caroline and wants to move out.

To Jess's surprise, Schmidt and Winston don't seem to care that Nick is moving out. However, Jess is not at all happy about it, but tells Nick that she wants him to be happy. Cece and Schmidt split up because Schmidt believes he is not good enough for Cece, and Cece feels betrayed by Schmidt because he has read a text message on her cell phone. In the evening, when everyone in the loft is already in bed, Nick comes back. He won't move in with Caroline.

season 2

Jess loses her job, which plunges her into a difficult slump. After a few odd jobs, including as a tutor, she got a job as a teacher again. In Nick's bar she meets Sam, with whom she has a brief affair, which ends because Jess wants more than he does. Schmidt suffers from the fact that Cece has a new man by her side, with whom she is obviously happy. Bishop's relationship is also going badly as he hasn't had sex with Shelby in weeks and they eventually split up. During a meal with Sadie, the gynecologist, Jess and Cece learn that egg production drops sharply from 30 onwards. A test reveals that Jess has all the time in the world, but Cece should start immediately. Thereupon Cece decides for a marriage with an Indian arranged by her mother, although Schmidt confesses his love to her. At a party, Jess meets Sam and the two get back together. When Nick, Schmidt and Winston tear up two women together, take them to the loft and play True American with the others , Jess and Nick have to kiss, but Nick climbs out of the window. Later, however, Nick surprises Jess with a passionate kiss, which Jess confesses to Sam the next day, after which he leaves her. Both Nick and Jess try to convince themselves that the kiss meant nothing to them.

Cece starts an affair with Schmidt again because she lacks sex. Shortly afterwards, she meets Shivrang, who makes her a proposal, which she accepts. Since the kiss, there has been a back and forth of feelings between Nick and Jess. However, they cannot admit to one another how they feel about one another. Schmidt enters into a relationship with his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth. Together they go to Cece's wedding. There Cece looks at Schmidt as if she doesn't want to get married. So Schmidt and Winston do everything in their power to sabotage the wedding. Jess' dad is in town too and doesn't agree that she wants to do anything serious with Nick as he thinks he's a failure. At the wedding, Jess and Nick agree to end it because it would only end in disaster. Cece really breaks off the wedding and chooses Schmidt. Shivrang also has another partner. Schmidt has to decide whether he wants to be with Cece or Elizabeth, but runs away. Nick and Jess realize independently of each other that they feel for each other and want to be together. They go away together.

season 3

Jess and Nick spend four days in Mexico believing that they will not be able to survive in the apartment. Schmidt cannot decide between Cece and Elisabeth, so he has a relationship with both women at the same time, but this is soon discovered and both women no longer want to have anything to do with Schmidt. He blames Jess and Nick for this, which is why he vows to tear the two apart. After several attempts, however, he realizes that the two really like each other and gives up his plan. Schmidt moves out of the shared apartment because he found out that his mother and Nick lied to him all their lives. Schmidt always exchanged letters and later e-mails with Michael Keaton, which was actually his mother and later Nick. He moves into the apartment across the street. Coach moves back into the shared apartment. Cece thinks her job is useless, which is why she starts working as a bartender at Nick's bar. Winston now wants to become a police officer. Schmidt and Cece both find it very difficult to cope with their separation. Nick meets Caroline by chance and she finds out that Nick is with Jess. Because Nick never told her why he just left her with the shared apartment back then, she now thinks that he left her because of Jess and even cheated on her with her. Nick then reveals the real reason: he's been in love with Jess since he first saw her.

Jess sister Abby is in town because she's in jail there. Jess picks her up from there and actually wants to prevent Abby from meeting her friends and Nick at all costs, but this fails because Abby changes her flight and therefore has to stay with Jess longer than Jess wanted. But Jess doesn't have the heart to send Abby back to her mother, which is why she is moving in the flat for the time being. After Abby has an affair with Schmidt for a week and also lives with Schmidt, she moves back to her mother. Because Schmidt has rented an expensive shop for Abby and can no longer afford the rent for his apartment, he moves into Jess's room, which is why Jess moves into Nick's room. When Nick and Jess talk about their futures, they find that they have nothing in common other than the fact that they love each other. With a heavy heart they separate from each other, which is very difficult for both of them. The fact that Jess doesn't have a room of her own makes the situation worse. Winston was accepted into the Police Academy after the second test attempt. Cece decides to catch up with her degree because she never did because of the modeling job. Schmidt helps her and together with him Cece can do it. Because Nick and Jess had booked a cruise before they split up, they take Schmidt, Coach, Winston and Cece with them so they are not alone. Coach cannot enjoy the trip because he is terrified of ships and therefore stays in the cabin all the time. Nick and Jess have to do the romance package on the ship because they are not getting back the $ 600 they paid for it. Through all the couple activities, the two get closer again, which both think is a stupid idea, so they decide to try to just be friends. Schmidt realizes that he still loves Cece and wants to tell her this, but doesn't because Cece talks about her new relationship with a younger boy in which she wants to be happy. Because Nick and Jess still have to sleep in the same room, Schmidt decides to move into a room with Nick and buy a bunk bed, just like they did in college. Nick jumps over his shadow for Jess and agrees.

Season 4

Nick and Jess have got used to being just friends again, Jess goes on several dates and has a serious relationship with Ryan Geauxinue, a teacher at their school, which she quits after he moves to London. Nick can't get involved in anything serious at first, but then begins a relationship with Trant's granddaughter Kai, which ends because Nick works too much for her. Schmidt and Nick decide to become business partners again and come up with some crazy ideas, like a jogging suit. Schmidt also has a relationship with Councilor Fawn Moscato because he is drawn to her dominance. After a while, Cece admits to still being in love with Schmidt, Schmidt proposes to her in the season finale, which she accepts. Winston passes the police exam after some difficulty and falls in love with his partner, Aly. Coach is a physical education teacher at Jess' school, meets May, a musician, on Nick's pub crawl, falls in love with her and moves to New York with her.

characters

Jessica "Jess" Christopher Day

Jess is in her late twenties and an elementary school teacher. She is cheerful and lovable. Since breaking up with Spencer, she has been lovesick because he cheated on her with another woman. Jessica loves her job and has also taken her three new roommates directly to the heart, but she always manages to get either herself or the boys into great trouble. She loves to sing to herself and is sometimes described by her roommates as a pain in the ass (her so-called “pogo”). She likes to bake cupcakes and knit a lot. Zooey Deschanel's pregnancy was covered up in the TV series with wide clothing.

Nicholas "Nick" Miller

Nick is a down-to-earth young man from Chicago who had big plans and studied law, but dropped out and works as a bartender. He can see through people very quickly and uses his humor to distract from his insecurity. He was also left by his girlfriend a few months ago and is still suffering from the separation. He likes to wear hoodies and casual clothes. He has several absurd fears and is writing a zombie novel, which he is only halfway through.

Winston Schmidt

Schmidt is a young and ambitious office stallion who thinks he's a Casanova. Schmidt is his last name, his first name Winston was only known in the sixth season. He is immature, often makes a fool of himself with his sayings and puts himself in embarrassing situations. He's also in love with his upper body, which he presents at every opportunity. His self-love and apparent fixation stems from the fact that he used to be very overweight. This is addressed in some flashbacks. Schmidt seems very crazy, but is still a lovable person. He is very tidy and almost does the housework and cooks in the shared apartment - and likes to do that, which his roommates are very happy about. He is of the Jewish faith.

Winston Bishop

Winston is a basketball player who is returning to the United States after two years in professional business in Latvia and is having trouble finding a job. He still doesn't really know what to do after his sports career.

Cecilia "Cece" Schmidt (formerly Parekh)

Cece is Jess' best friend and model. She sometimes acts superficially and condescendingly according to the model cliché, but is a good friend of Jess. The two have been friends since childhood. Later she begins a (initially secret) relationship with Schmidt. In the final episode of the fifth season, the two get married.

Ernie "Coach" Tagliaboo

Coach is a former athlete who now works as a personal trainer. At the beginning of the series he moved out of the shared flat and from now on is only mentioned occasionally. After he was left by his girlfriend in the third season, he moves back into the flat.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was done at Cinephon Filmproduktions GmbH in Berlin , under the dialogue direction of Martin Schmitz . The dialogue books wrote Schmitz together with Katrin Kabbathas.

production

In June 2011, Fox announced that they would be producing a new comedy series with Zooey Deschanel . Jake Johnson , Max Greenfield , Damon Wayans, Jr. and Hannah Simone have also been signed for other roles . After the pilot became a series, Damon Wayans, Jr. dropped out of the series because his Happy Endings series was extended. A short time later, Lamorne Morris was signed instead . On September 23, 2011, Lake Bell and Natasha Lyonne were cast for guest roles. Even Michaela Watkins and Eva Amurri were committed for guest roles. In October 2011, Lizzy Caplan was confirmed for a story arc in which she plays the role of the smart, young woman, Julia, who wants to conquer Nick. Rachael Harris was cast in the role of Tanya, Assistant Principal of Jessica's School, on October 12, 2011. In July 2013, Fox announced that Damon Wayans, Jr. would be returning for four episodes for the series' third season. In November 2013, Wayans was signed as a special guest star for the remaining episodes of the third season .

On September 28, 2011, New Girl was extended for a complete first season, which is why the first season now includes 24 episodes instead of 13. In April 2012 the extension for a 25-part second season followed. Both the announcement of the production of a third season in March 2013 and that of a fourth season in March 2014 were both made early.

At the end of March 2015, the series was extended for a fifth season. Due to Zooey Deschanel's pregnancy , filming began immediately after the fourth season in order to give Deschanel a longer break from filming after the birth of her child. The production of a sixth season was announced in April 2016. On May 14, FOX extended the series to include an eight episode seventh season ending New Girl.

reception

At the Golden Globe Awards 2012 , leading actress Deschanel received a nomination in the category Best Actress in a Series - Comedy or Musical . The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ruled: “The resistance against the purposeful life, as it characterizes generations of involuntarily big boys, appears erotically pimped up and refined with feminine nuances. That is good for a lot of jokes, but whether Jess can become a heroine with her own agenda remains to be seen. " Spiegel Online praised the leading actress:" In a unique balancing act, Deschanel manages to make her Jess equally needy and headstrong, uptight and make it appear sexy, cute and annoying. "
