Three years later: Jess and Nick return from a trip to Europe where Nick did readings for his book. They are still not married, even though Nick promised Jess' father Bob. Ruth, the daughter of Schmidt and Cece is turning three and Schmidt finally wants to offer her the perfect birthday party, the first two went pretty wrong. But this party is getting out of hand again. Aly is pregnant and Winston annoys her with it because she should choose the best pregnancy picture. Schmidt grew a schnauzer, which annoys Nick. At the end they all meet in the loft and celebrate their reunion, although only Jess and Nick live there.

Cece and Schmidt are totally lost because Ruth doesn't want to sleep. But Cece is able to escape because she has arranged to meet Jess for lunch. Jess now works for Russell but feels left out because she is never invited to the Tuesday meeting. So they go to the company and burst into the men's group. As it turns out, it's the divorced men's support group.

Schmidt tries to get Ruth to sleep with the help of Nick and Winston. But Nick has other problems because his editor wants to discontinue the Pepperwood Chronicles and he now finds himself in a creative crisis. Finally he begins to invent a fairy tale for Ruth and realizes that these could be his new books.

Schmidt and Cece want to enroll their daughter in a posh preschool. They ask Jess if she can teach her some things for it. Schmidt soon argues with Jess about their training methods, because his worst competitor for the place at the school is his old friend Benjamin with his son. During the trial lesson, the situation escalates because Ruth doesn't want to go to this preschool at all.

Nick was supposed to write 20 pages for his new book, but he's got a block. Winston also needs his help, as he now has to testify as a detective in court, but is inhibited. Nick embroils him in an interrogation about an old university affair. Only when Winston can admit what really happened then can he speak freely.

It's been a year since Winston's cat Furguson died. Therefore, according to Jewish custom, the tombstone is now unveiled. Everyone worries that Winston has never really cried since the cat died. Aly tries to find out why. Coach has also come to visit and Jess quickly realizes that something is wrong between him and Nick. She manages to get Nick to tell her what's bothering him. He loaned Coach a large sum of money that he invested in a project that went wrong. Nick now says that Coach ripped him off and is angry about it. Since Jess and Nick no longer want to keep secrets from each other, Jess confesses that she feels responsible for the death of Furguson. But Winston can assure her that it wasn't her fault. Schmidt worries about Cece because he wants to know what she will do if he dies.

Schmidt goes back to work and Cece has to take care of Ruth. When she wants to pick her up from preschool, she forgets her cell phone with the access code for the door and asks Nick to help her. Since Nick still thinks he is Ruth's godfather, he wants to get her out of preschool himself, but loses the cell phone when he tries to climb over the fence and messes with the security guard. Cece calls Schmidt, who then leaves his new boss to take care of Ruth.

Winston and Aly choose Jess to be their baby godmother, but want to see if she is really suitable. She surprises Winston with the fact that she has found his father, but has to learn from Aly that this is not his father because she was already looking for him herself. Winston is very disappointed about this because he has already developed feelings for the strange man.

Schmidt wants Cece to be all to himself again and has therefore hired a babysitter and booked a hotel room. Cece thinks this is a great idea, especially since she has just ovulated and still wants a child. Schmidt panics because he cannot imagine holding out the pregnant Cece for another nine months.

Winston received glasses for testing purposes with which he can see all colors and is shocked about it. He doesn't know if he wants that.

Nick finally wants to propose to Jess, but she has other plans. She wants to try again to adopt a dog. This messes up Nick's entire schedule, especially since Jess's father, Bob, is putting pressure on him.

Jess and Nick's wedding day is approaching. Since they did not obey the rule of not sleeping together the night before the wedding, they are now afraid of unhappiness. Jess immediately slips on the damp bathroom floor and injures his eye and has to wear an eye patch, which does not fit her at all. Her mother gives her a joint to relax her, which has fatal consequences. Nick has problems with his publisher who does not want to publish his new book because it is not suitable as a children's book. Aly goes into labor but doesn't want anyone to notice because she doesn't want to endanger the wedding. Russell also shows up and tries to convince Jess again that he is the right one for her. Finally, Aly still has to go to the hospital because the contractions are getting worse. But it is still enough to hold the wedding in the hallway of the hospital.

A month after the wedding, Jess and Nick Schmidt, Cece and Winston call to inform them that they have to move out of the loft because the company 'Engram Pattersky' has given notice to all tenants. But they don't want to talk about it on the phone and they all meet there. They are horrified to find that the two have to move out in 24 hours and have not packed anything yet. Meanwhile, Jess tries to refresh old stories that happened in the loft to remember the times they shared. But everyone but you finished with the loft. Still, they join in and play True American with her one last time . When the moving truck is then packed, Winston reveals that this is the whole thing is his biggest prank he has ever done and that 'Engram Pattersky' means an anagram for 'My Greatest Prank' and they don't have to move out. Nevertheless, Nick and Jess decide not to return to the loft.
