Sir James Arthur Ratcliffe (born October 18, 1952 in Failsworth , Lancashire ) is a British chemical engineer, founder and director of the chemical company Ineos .

Life

Ratcliff's father was a self-employed carpenter who ran a small furniture factory, and his mother worked as an accountant. The family moved to Yorkshire in 1962. Ratcliffe attended the state grammar school in Beverley and studied chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham , where he graduated in 1974.

Ratcliffe first worked at Esso and the synthetic fiber manufacturer Courtaulds and also studied business administration for an MBA at the London Business School . Since 1989 he worked for the US private equity company Advent International . Ratcliffe was involved in the founding of INSPEC, which leased the former chemical plant of BP Chemicals in Antwerp .

In 1998 he founded Ineos in Hampshire , which INSPEC took over in a buy-out . Ratcliffe owns around 60 percent of the company, which subsequently bought divested parts of the company from large European companies and became a large company in the European chemical industry. In 2008, the company relocated its headquarters to Rolle VD in Switzerland for tax reasons ; there has also been a management office in London since 2015.

He was featured several times on the Sunday Times' annual list of the UK's super-rich and named the UK's richest person at £ 21.05 billion in 2018.

Ratcliffe, who had always spoken out in favor of Brexit , relocated its headquarters to Monaco in March 2019, where he hopes to save up to £ 4 billion in taxes

Ratcliffe is married for the second time and has three children.

In December 2017, Ineos took over the football club FC Lausanne-Sport from western Switzerland . In August 2019, Jim Ratcliffe arranged for Ineos to take over the French first division club OGC Nice . The French competition authority approved the purchase on August 21, 2019. According to French media reports, the purchase price will amount to 100 million euros.

Ratcliffe is the spiritus rector of the Ineos Grenadier SUV .
