Carla Neil Gugino (born August 29, 1971 in Sarasota , Florida ) is an American actress of Italian , British and Irish descent.

life and career

Carla Gugino was born to an Italian orthodontist and a British-Irish mother. Her parents separated when Gugino was two years old. When she was five, she moved to Paradise , California with her mother . She had to move within the state several times during her childhood, but was a good student throughout her high school years and was even allowed to deliver the graduation speech. A modeling agency discovered her in San Diego and sent her to New York City when she was barely 15 . However, Gugino returned to Los Angeles , modeling there and, on the advice of her aunt, actress Carol Merrill, attended an acting class.

Gugino made her debut as an actress with guest appearances on television series, such as in an episode of Who's the Boss? from 1988. Her first role in a movie she had on the side of Shelley Long and Craig T. Nelson in the adventure comedy The Wilds of Beverly Hills (1989). From 1989 to 1990 she was seen in eleven episodes of the television series Falcon Crest . In 1994 she starred in the music video for Always with the band Bon Jovi . In the comedy Miami Rhapsody (1995) she played the sister of the protagonist Gwyn Marcus ( Sarah Jessica Parker ), whose marital problems cause Gwyn to postpone her wedding. A year later she played the lead role in the film drama Young, Female, Mercilessly, a woman who was raped by two other women.

The supporting role at the side of Nicolas Cage in the thriller Spiel auf Zeit (1998) brought Gugino a nomination for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award in 1999 . In the action comedies Spy Kids (2001) , Spy Kids 2 - The Return of the Super Spies (2002) and Mission 3D (2003), she played the wife of Gregorio Cortez ( Antonio Banderas ) and at the same time the mother of the underage super spies. For her role in the thriller American Gangster (2007), she and her fellow actors were nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2008. In 2015, Gugino played the wife of Dwayne Johnson in the disaster thriller San Andreas . This was followed by other film roles and she was also featured in various television series, including Spuk in Hill House in 2018 . Her acting work includes more than 90 productions.
