action
The Genesis company, led by Nathaniel Shepherd, organizes the first permanent resident space flight to Mars with a crew of astronauts led by Sarah Elliott. On the outward flight, Elliott discovers that she is pregnant; she dies giving birth to her son Gardner on Mars. Shepherd keeps this a secret so as not to jeopardize the company's image and thus its business success; Elliott's death is justified with a ruptured spacesuit.
Gardner grew up on Mars, where he supported the changing teams of scientists as a teenager. The astronaut Kendra, to whom Gardner has a rather distant relationship, acts as surrogate mother. Gardner cannot go to earth because his body is only adapted to the conditions on Mars. He has a robot that he helped to design as a helper and “best friend” and chats regularly with Tulsa, a student on Earth. He withholds the fact that he lives on Mars, and instead writes to her that he suffers from the vitreous bone disease and therefore cannot visit her. Finally, Gardner's wish to travel to earth is granted, but he has to undergo a difficult operation beforehand.
Gardner travels to earth with Kendra, where he is particularly enthusiastic about the water and the bright colors. Housed in a quarantine room, he is said to be subjected to further examinations, whereupon he escapes. He finds Tulsa at her school and tells her that he is cured of his illness. When he indicates to her that he comes from Mars, she feels teased. Together they want to find his father. His mother left him a photo of her hugging a man in front of her house by the sea. Since they are being followed by the police as well as by Shepherd and Kendra, they steal vehicles while fleeing and fly in Tulsa's foster father's junk- old agricultural plane . On the way they fall in love. In Las Vegas, with its replicas of famous buildings, Tulsa Gardner would like to show the world, but he sees it as artificial. Gardner collapses and comes to the hospital, where one is amazed at his thin bones and his too big heart. Knowing that he cannot be helped, he flees the clinic with Tulsa. Shepherd has had a special test done on Gardner's blood, which suggests that his life is in danger.
Gardner and Tulsa eventually find his mother's house. When they confront the man who lives there that he is Gardner's father, it turns out that he is Sarah's brother. For Gardner, the purpose of his journey has been fulfilled and he is trying to find death in the sea. Shepherd and Kendra arrive, and Gardner can be saved. He has now understood that Shepherd is his father, who now confirms this to him.
In order to normalize his organism again, they fly with Gardner in a space glider into thinner layers of air. When this does not bring the desired success, Shepherd takes the helm and flies illegally into the stratosphere . Gardner then recovers in weightlessness and flies back to Mars on an expedition.
Tulsa, now in a home, and Gardner are still in contact via video telephony when Kendra comes into the home and says she is now responsible for training NASA's new recruits. She offers Tulsa to live with her on her recently purchased ranch. Finally, we see Tulsa training at NASA to participate in the space program, and Shepherd and Gardner take a walk on Mars, where Gardner realizes that the red planet is his home and people, regardless of whether they are from it Earth or Mars, hardly differ from each other.
reception
Andreas Staben von Filmstarts thinks that “the mixture of science fiction, family drama and love story served with a little action and a lot of emotion” has recognizable role models: “ The Martian ”, “ ET ” and “ Starman ” meet “ Fate is a” lousy traitor ”. This mixture "works surprisingly well". The only "really unsuccessful aspect" in the "soulful teenage romance of a different kind" is "the structure of the family melodrama [...] with its overconstructed and at the same time banal twists".
Trivia
In his quarters at the Mars station, Gardner Elliott watches the German film Der Himmel über Berlin , although he doesn't understand German. Nevertheless, he understands the plot and recognizes the commonality to his desire to live on earth.
