Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield (born April 1, 1997 in Islington , London ) is a British actor . He gained notoriety for his roles as Bruno in the Holocaust film drama The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and as Hugo Cabret in the fantasy film of the same name by Martin Scorsese .

life and career

Butterfield was born in Islington, London . He began acting at the age of eight in the Young Actors Theater in his hometown. A short time later, Asa Butterfield landed smaller roles, such as in the television film My Friend on Four Paws (2006), in the movie The Son of Rambow (2007) and in the series Ashes to Ashes - Back to the 80s (2008).

A year later Butterfield starred in the film adaptation of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas , alongside Vera Farmiga and Rupert Friend . Director Mark Herman chose Asa for the role not only because of his talent, but also because Butterfield knew little about the Holocaust . Thus, as intended, he was able to keep young Bruno's innocence. At the same time as The Boy in the Striped Pajamas , Asa Butterfield also auditioned for a role in the film Mr. Nobody , which he also received. However, since the filming overlapped, Butterfield opted for the former.

Before he starred in the horror film Wolfman in 2010, Butterfield played the role of the druid Mordred in the British television series Merlin - The New Adventures .
