Rupert William Anthony Friend (born October 9, 1981 in Oxfordshire , England ) is a British actor .

Life

Rupert Friend completed his acting training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London . He made his film debut in 2004 in the role of John Wilmot's teenage lover , played by Johnny Depp , in the period drama The Libertine . The part earned him the 2005 Satellite Award for Most Promising Acting Talent and a nomination for the British Independent Film Award for Best Young Actor.

In 2005, Friend played the role of Mr. Wickham in Joe Wright's Jane Austen film Pride and Prejudice . In the same year he played the male lead opposite Joan Plowright in the tragic comedy Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, directed by Dan Ireland . In 2007 he starred alongside Alfred Molina and Jonathan Pryce in the war drama The Moon and the Stars , starred with Sean Bean and Bob Hoskins in the crime film Outlaw, and appeared alongside Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley in the period film The Last Legion . In 2008 he again directed the independent drama Jolene under the direction of Dan Ireland , in which he played a drug addict musician and tattoo artist on the side of Jessica Chastain .

In the Colette film version Chéri - A Comedy of Vanities (2009) he played the title role and in Victoria, the young queen he played alongside Emily Blunt Victoria's husband Albert von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha . In 2011 he took on one of the leading roles in the war film 5 Days of War .

From 2012 to 2017 he starred in the award-winning US series Homeland in the role of Peter Quinn, for which he received nominations for the Emmy and the Screen Actors Guild Awards .

From 2005 to 2010, Friend and fellow actor Keira Knightley , whom he met while filming Pride and Prejudice , were a couple. In May 2016 he married the athlete Aimee Mullins , with whom he had been dating since 2013.
