Ben Kingsley
Sir Ben Kingsley , CBE (born December 31, 1943 in Scarborough , Yorkshire , England ; actually Krishna Pandit Bhanji ) is a British actor . He became world-famous for his title role in the epic film Gandhi , for which he was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor in 1983 .
Life
Youth and theater career
Kingsley grew up as Krishna Pandit Bhanji in Pendlebury near Manchester . His paternal grandfather was at the age of nine orphan and by a wealthy spice merchant in Zanzibar adopted . After the foster father's death , he took over the business and later moved to South Africa. Kingsley's father, Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, was born in Kenya in 1914 and sent to England to study in 1927. When Kingsley's grandfather died two years later, the Aga Khan, as head of the Ismaili Muslim community , took over the costs of the education of his father, who later became a doctor in Manchester. Kingsley's mother, Anna Lyna Mary (née Goodman; 1914-2010) from England, was an actress and model.
Kingsley initially followed his father's career as a chemical laboratory technician , but at the same time joined an amateur drama troupe and finally gave in to his passion for the theater after he played Ian Holm as Richard III. at a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company .
Kingsley studied at the University of Salford and Pendleton College and played in first theater productions. After an unsuccessful audition, he took his stage name at the age of nineteen on the advice of his father, as he suspected that his Indian name would be disadvantaged. At the next audition under his English stage name he was successful.
The Beatles manager Brian Epstein became aware of Kingsley through the theater revue A Smashing Day . Kingsley wanted to continue to pursue acting. In 1967 he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and played among the likes of Peter Hall and Peter Brook .
Movie and TV
In 1972 Kingsley played a supporting role in his first film Fear is the Key . For the next few years he was continuously seen in smaller roles on television, including one year in the soap opera Coronation Street .
Kingsley's international breakthrough came in 1982 with the title role in Sir Richard Attenborough's film Gandhi . For his performance as an actor he was awarded the BAFTA Award and the Oscar . He also won a Grammy for his recording of Gandhi speeches. In the 2001 documentary Ben Kingsley Talks About 'Gandhi' he talks about the difficulties of this role and the background to the film.
He played other important roles in, among others, Steven Spielberg 's Schindler's List and the Roman Polański films Death and the Maiden and Oliver Twist .
In 2010 he starred in Mike Newell's adventure film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and in Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller Shutter Island , alongside Leonardo DiCaprio . In 2011, the film Hugo Cabret followed again, directed by Martin Scorsese , in which he played the film pioneer Georges Méliès alongside Asa Butterfield . In 2013, Der Medicus followed, and again alongside Asa Butterfield, the science fiction film Ender's Game - The Big Game .
In 2014, Kingsley was in the Bible adaptation Exodus: Gods and Kings and in the third part of the Night in the Museum trilogy, Night in the Museum: The Mysterious Tomb .
In 2019 he took on a leading role in the series Perpetual Grace, LTD .
His standard German dubbing voice was Peter Matić until his death in 2019 .
Private life
On August 3, 2007, Kingsley married the Brazilian actress Daniela Lavender, their fourth marriage. The celebration took place at Kingsley's home in Oxfordshire, England. He has four children, three sons and a daughter. His son Ferdinand is also an actor.
Ben Kingsley is a member of the Quakers .
Awards
Kingsley has received an Oscar , a Grammy , BAFTA , two Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Award . At the 1985 Grammy Awards , he received the award for Best Spoken or Non-Music Recording for The Words of Gandhi .
His role as Meyer Lansky in Barry Levinson's gangster film Bugsy (1991) and his portrayal in the thriller comedy Sexy Beast (2002) earned him a nomination for the Oscar for best supporting actor, for the role of Massoud Amir Behrani in Vadim Perelman's House of Sand and Nebel (2003) he was nominated for best leading actor.
In 2000 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and appointed in 2001 by Queen Elizabeth II. The Knights defeated.
In 2010, Kingsley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles .
In 2013 he received the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment from the BAFTAs .
His participation in Uwe Boll's trash film BloodRayne earned Kingsley a nomination for the anti-award Golden Raspberry .
