action

In 1899 a lecturer at Oxford University presented a case of female hysteria to his students . The patient, Lady Eliza Graves, is drugged. Meanwhile, she protested in the classroom that she was actually healthy. The lecturer continues with his lecture and points out that all mentally ill people claim to be healthy, just as all criminals claim to be innocent. He advises his students not to believe anything they hear and only half of what they see.

On Christmas Eve 1899, the young and inexperienced Edward Newgate went to the remote Stonehearst mental hospital to gain practical experience as a budding neurologist and to learn the most modern techniques and methods for dealing with mental illnesses. The conditions there and unorthodox methods surprised him utterly. Under the leadership of Dr. Silas Lamb, who pretends to be the head of the institution, the patients move around freely and without any drug sedation. Edward is particularly interested in Lady Eliza Graves, who is considered a hysteric, but who appears to be completely sane and is being treated by Lamb with music therapy. Lamb explains to him that Eliza Graves had an abusive and painful past with her husband. As a result, she developed hysteria and has since been unable to bear emotional or physical contact without falling into hysterical attacks. She stabbed out her husband's right eye and bit off his left ear. To protect her from her husband, her father sent her to the institution. Her husband has been trying to get her back into his care ever since. Dr. But Lamb defies her husband's demands to keep protecting her.

Newgate discovers that the prison's actual doctors and nurses are locked up in the basement. The actual leader, Dr. Benjamin Salt explains that Lamb and Finn secretly put drugs into their drinks and this led to revolt. Dr. Salt and Mrs. Pike, the head nurse, warn Newgate that Lamb is a dangerous man. Lamb used to be a surgeon who murdered five of his patients during the war.

Edward, who promises the prisoners their release, soon understands that Lamb is not completely insane, but rather the perfidious treatment methods of contemporary nerve healing and the leading prison doctor Dr. Salt resisted for good reasons. However, the improvement that many patients show under Lamb's regime is offset by the cruel treatment of the prisoners, including by the sadistic Mickey Finn, Lamb's right-hand man. Edward tries to free the prisoners with the help of Eliza, who supports him after initial skepticism, which he finally succeeds.

Lady Graves' husband and the Oxford University lecturers are later seen arriving at Stonehearst. The mental hospital has now been changed by Ms. Pike, who is now in charge and incorporates many of Lamb's treatment methods into the therapies. The lecturer demands the discharge of Lady Graves, whereupon Ms. Pike says that Dr. Newgate initiated this weeks in advance. The lecturer shows that he is the real Dr. Newgate is, and the one they met was a cheat who was also shown to the students at the lecture and saw Lady Graves and vowed to free her at some point.

The end of the film shows the Santa Cristina mental hospital in Tuscany , where he and Lady Graves pose as Dr. and Mrs. Lamb and the methods of Dr. Silas Lamb, et al. a. use music therapy to treat patients.
