Jim Sturgess (born May 16, 1978 in London , England , United Kingdom ; born James Anthony Sturgess ) is an English actor and musician .

Live and act

Sturgess grew up in Farnham , Surrey and performed at London's National Youth Music Theater from 1993 to 1995 . His first film role he played alongside Albert Finney , Greta Scacchi , Matthew Modine and Julian Sands in the British film drama The Browning Version by Mike Figgis dating back to 1994. 1997 he joined the School of Media, Music and Performance of the University of Salford from. He was discovered while performing his self-written and self-produced, poetry-based one-act show called "Buzzin '". He then played minor roles in some British television series and independent films and became a member of two bands ("Dilated Spies" and "Saint Faith"). As they both broke up, he began to focus more on acting.

He played one of the bigger roles alongside Ciarán Hinds in the television drama Thursday the 12th (2000). In the music film Across the Universe (2007), Sturgess played the lead role of an English port worker who travels to the United States and falls in love there. The release of the film drama The Queen's Sister , in which he starred alongside Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson , was screened at the 2008 Berlinale in February 2008 . He played one of his most famous roles in 21 . In it he embodies an MIT student who makes millions by counting cards in Las Vegas casinos. In Crossing Over (2009) he plays alongside Harrison Ford , Ray Liotta and Ashley Judd . The film is about different people from different countries who have immigrated to the USA and are trying to become naturalized. In the same year, 50 Dead Men Walking was released , in which he, in the lead role, portrays a young Irishman who is commissioned by the British police to spy on the IRA and thereby save the lives of over 50 people. For the horror film Heartless (2009) by Philip Ridley , Sturgess received the Best Actor Award at the Fantasporto Film Festival in 2010 . In the adventure drama The Way Back (2011) by Peter Weir , he plays a Polish soldier alongside Colin Farrell and Ed Harris . In the film, which is set in World War II, he breaks out of a Russian extermination camp with a group of prisoners and walks with them from Siberia to non-communist India . In November 2011, the love story Two in One Day was published in Germany , which is based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls . In it, Sturgess plays the male lead role Dexter, while Anne Hathaway plays the female lead role as Emma Morley. The film is about two students who meet for the first time on July 15, 1988. After that, their story is told every July 15 for the next 20 years.

His latest film projects have been Upside Down , a science fiction romance with Kirsten Dunst , Promised Land and Ashes .

In addition to his acting career, Jim Sturgess is also active as a songwriter and musician. So he wrote and sang two songs for his role in Crossing Over and three songs for the film Heartless . He is currently working with a band called Tragic Toys , in collaboration with his partner. He describes his music genre as alternative, ambient and electro.

In 2014, it was confirmed that Sturgess and Bae Doona , co-star in Cloud Atlas , are in a relationship.
