action

Mary Boleyn married William Carey in 1520 . Shortly after the wedding, her sister Anne Boleyn was told by her parents that the King of England, Henry VIII , would soon appear in their house. Anne should seduce him and become his mistress, because that would bring the family more recognition and Anne a marriage to a duke or margrave. The king's wife, Catherine of Aragon , has just lost a child, and the royal couple has only one daughter left. So now it would be particularly beneficial to become a mistress. But when the king is injured while hunting with Anne, he turns his eyes to Anne's already married sister Mary. Anne is angry.

Mary is invited to the court to become Katharina's lady-in-waiting with Anne. Mary secretly becomes Henry's new mistress. Meanwhile, Anne marries a duke who has already been promised to someone else. The marriage is dissolved and Anne is sent to France to study. A short time later, Mary is expecting her first child and becomes bedridden due to poor health. Now Anne is sent to court to entertain the king - and always to remind him of Mary. However, she develops a cruel plan: She wants to win Henry back and send Mary and her child to the country. When Mary's son is born, Henry turns away from Mary because of his love for Anne. Mary is sent away with her child and is not supposed to come back.

Anne refuses to sleep with Henry until he separates from his wife. But this is difficult to do in the Catholic Church. That is why he turns away from the Pope and separates England from Rome. In the end he is excommunicated and Katharina is sent away. Anne is expecting a child, but instead of the boy she was hoping for, a girl named Elizabeth is born. Henry slowly turns away from Anne. She brings her sister back to court, she is supposed to help her now. Anne becomes pregnant again, but she loses the child after a short time. Desperate, she asks her brother George Boleyn to sleep with her so she can get pregnant again. After hesitating, he agrees, but when they are together he tells her he can't do that. Anne accepts that. George's jealous wife, Jane Parker, watches her in bed and tells the king what she has seen.

Henry charges Anne with treason and adultery. Mary, who has meanwhile returned to the country, comes back to the courtyard when she hears of Anne and George's arrest. She tries to persuade Henry not to execute Anne because he has already beheaded George and because Anne means something to her. The king is hesitant but agrees. On the day Anne is about to be beheaded, Henry sends Mary a letter saying that he loves her and that she should never come back to court. He continues to write that he cannot fulfill her request for Anne. So Mary has to watch as Anne is beheaded. After Anne's execution, Mary runs through the castle, takes the baby Elizabeth with her and escapes from the castle.

In the last scene Mary walks through a field as in the opening scene. Her new husband, William Stafford, runs next to her. Their two children, Catherine and Henry, play in front of them. A third child can be seen. It has red curls. The epilogue says that the girl with the red curly hair is Elizabeth and that after a long time she will become Queen of England.

Reviews

Daniel Kothenschulte wrote in the Frankfurter Rundschau on March 6, 2008 that the "expansion of perspective on the older sister" by Anne Boleyn was the "coup of history" , which at the same time brought Scarlett Johansson "a notable role" . The script was "smug" and reminded of "a costume film from the old Hollywood days" . So that the love of "the beautiful leading actress" seems more plausible, the king has been depicted less bloodthirsty, which makes him "from the actor to a pale, uninteresting figure" . The film is "just as effortless to watch with Justin Chadwick's straightforward direction as it is to be forgotten again afterwards . "

Susanne Ostwald wrote in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung on March 6, 2008 that the film took “certain artistic freedoms with historical truth” , but offered “a thoroughly appealing approach to a well-known story” , “by taking it out of the changing Perspective of the two sisters ” tell. The director creates a “big costume cinema” and “a harmonious atmosphere” with a “star ensemble as the driving force behind his remarkable but ultimately conventional historical film” .

The editors of www.kino.de described the film as an "opulent historical tragedy" . TV Spielfilm magazine wrote that the film was a “puzzle of betrayal, passion and love” . The editorial team of Bayerischer Rundfunk counts the film as one of the “2008 Cinema Highlights” .

Awards

Scarlett Johansson was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2008.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
