Peter Morgan CBE (born April 10, 1963 in London ) is a British screenwriter .

Life

Morgan is the son of refugees, his father Arthur Morgenthau was a German Jew and his mother a Polish Catholic .

He graduated from Leeds University . In 2003 he wrote the screenplay for The Deal , a television film about the political deal between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown . In 2006, Morgan's first play Frost / Nixon was premiered at Donmar Warehouse : It is about the television interview of British television journalist David Frost with former US President Richard Nixon . For his screenplay for The Queen (2006, directed by Stephen Frears ) he received a Golden Globe Award in 2007 and was nominated for an Oscar and the European Film Prize . Also in 2006 he co-wrote the screenplay for The Last King of Scotland , about the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin , which won him the 2007 BAFTA Award . For his script for Ron Howard's theater adaptation Frost / Nixon , he received the Satellite Award in 2008 and further nominations for the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar in 2009. In 2016 he developed the drama series The Crown, produced by the online streaming service Netflix . The first season of the series won the Satellite Award in 2016 and the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series in 2017 . On April 22nd, 2017 he was awarded the Romy , an Austrian film and television prize in the "International" category.

Personal

Morgan married his Austrian wife, Lila, a daughter of Karel Schwarzenberg , in 1997. They have five children together. The family lived in Battersea until 2006 and then in Vienna . In 2014 the couple separated and Peter Morgan moved back to London . He has been in a relationship with Gillian Anderson since 2016 .

At the 2016 New Year ceremony, Morgan was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II .
