Daniel Kothenschulte

Daniel Kothenschulte (* 1967 in Porz , now the district of Cologne ) is a German film critic and film scholar .

Life

Daniel Kothenschulte grew up in his native city of Cologne. There and in Bochum he studied art history , theater, film and television studies as well as German .

Kothenschulte works as a film critic for the Frankfurter Rundschau . In addition to his numerous articles and essays on film history, photography, art and pop culture, he published the book Improvements to the American Dream in 1998 , in which he deals with Robert Redford's directorial work . Kothenschultes specialty is animation . He has published many publications in particular on the life and work of Walt Disney and his artistic collaborators.

Kothenschulte also works as a film curator . He put together film programs for the exhibitions Marinus and Heartfield - Political Images and La Bohème at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. He participated in several editions of the KunstFilmBiennale . In 2009, he curated and presented the retrospective of the American cameraman and director Ed Lachman.

In addition, Kothenschulte worked as a university lecturer. From 2004 to 2005 he held a teaching position for art history at the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and in 2005/2006 a teaching position in the design department of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . Kothenschulte is also a lecturer at the University of Television and Film Munich .

In 2004 he was a member of the jury of the Backup Festival . In 2009 and 2010 he led the Young Critic's Workshop for selected film students from the colleges in Mumbai at the Mumbai Film Festival (MIFF), India. In 2013 Kothenschulte was a member of the jury at the International Competition of the Stuttgart Animated Film Festival .

In 2013, Kothenschulte founded the series of events "Videonale Scope", which has taken place annually in Cologne since then, with retrospectives by international film and media artists, which he presented in workshop discussions. The guests included Kenneth Anger , James Benning and Birgit Hein , Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet, Wilhelm Hein and Lutz Mommartz .

In 1986 he appeared as a candidate under the name "Hans Wahn" in the ZDF program " Der Große Preis " and caused a minor scandal with his flippant manner.

Kothenschulte lives in Cologne and has an extensive collection of classic Hollywood glamor photography of well-known stars.
