Press reviews

  • It is the wealth of detail in Kothenschultes portraits of the most important and some surprising, because rather unknown, protagonists of the Hollywood of the time that makes this book so instructive. And it is Nippoldt's pictures that make it worth seeing. [...] That's just eye candy. - Andreas Platthaus , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
  • Hollywood in the 30s is a perfectly staged illustrated book that is convincing in terms of both appearance and content. In other words: He is beautiful like the Garbo, elegant like Fred Astaire and lively like the Marx Brothers. This epoch has certainly never been portrayed so light-footed, so lively, so witty, but above all so original. - Eva Hepper, Deutschlandradio Kultur, Berlin
  • The illustrated book takes the reader on a journey through what is probably the most fascinating decade of the dream factory. The illustrator Robert Nippoldt and the film critic Daniel Kothenschulte have teamed up to pay tribute to this special time: with dreamy drawings and exciting background texts. A book not only for fashion fans, but also for nostalgics and film buffs. - Harper`s Bazaar, Munich
  • Robert Nippoldt flatters divas like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich with his perfect stroke. - Katja Lüthge, Berliner Zeitung
  • The texts speak in classic, but unpretentiously modern language, about equally classic, but no longer quite so modern, cinematographic phenomena. Browsing through it was fun ... and good old Tod Browning, it's nice that he isn't completely forgotten. - Tom Tykwer , film director, screenwriter, film producer
  • Nippoldt, just 32 years old, has a keen eye for characteristics and defining details. In his drawings, people get an individual, not a standardized expression. You are not seen through the distorting glasses of a cartoonist, but with the loving gaze of an admirer. It's easy to rave about this book. It doesn't end when you start reading. Daniel Kothenschulte's texts are informative, factual, without false irony or teasing punch lines. An impressive essay on film history. Seen as a whole, this creates a nice balance between word and image. - Hans Helmut Prinzler, Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin
  • A cool, glamorous, encyclopedic celebration of perhaps the most important decade in movie history - the '30s. Robert Nippoldt's wood-cut style illustrations are frameable, jazz-age art and Daniel Kothenschulte's text is as knowing and alive as the decade itself. Hollywood in the '30s bubbles like a post-prohibition champagne cocktail. - Mitch Glazer, producer, Los Angeles
  • The booming cinematic era captured in the work of Kothenschulte and Nippoldt continues to be a true inspiration to contemporary directors, producers and actors alike. - Tom LaBonge, Councilman, Los Angeles, 2014
  • Hollywood in the 30's… features gorgeous illustrations by Robert Nippoldt, explaining everything from jobs on a film set to the movie monsters of the era. - VanityFair, New York
  • Hollywood in the 30's pays homage to the inspired creative direction and celebrity egos both in front of the camera and behind the silver screen. Nippoldt's evocative drawings conjure up the magical and not-so-magical world of old Hollywood and the thrills of movie-making in this timeless keepsake from a bygone age. - Bethan King, Toni & Guy Magazine, London
