Busby Berkeley (* 29. November 1895 in Los Angeles , California ; † 14. March 1976 in Palm Springs , California; actually William Berkeley Enos ) was an influential Hollywood - film director and choreographer , who was known for his musical productions with complex geometric figures in which he used a large number of dancers as geometric elements.

Like many other directors of his time, Berkeley began his career as a theater director. But unlike many colleagues of his time, he saw the camera as something that could move and felt that this mobility should be used to give the film audience perspectives and perspectives on people and things that were not possible for the theater audience due to the unchanging position of the stage. Through his work he managed to make the film musical into its own genre with its own justification. Between 1935 and 1937 he was nominated three times in a row for an Oscar in the category of best dance directing .

Busby Berkeley was married to actress Merna Kennedy from 1934 to 1935 .

He died in Palm Springs at the age of 80.
