Love without thread and thread is an American musical comedy from 1934 directed by William Dieterle and with music numbers by Busby Berkeley . The film is based on the short story The Fashion Plate by Harry Collins and Warren Duff.
action
New Yorker Sherwood Nash's real estate business goes bankrupt in the Great Depression . A little later he met the unsuccessful dress designer Lynn Mason, whose designs gave him an idea: Together with Lynn and his business partner Snap, he was now selling cheap copies of expensive Parisian designer clothes. The problem-free success is not long-lasting, however, as the owners of the more luxurious clothing stores in New York are behind Sherwood's seedy stores. Sherwood then offers the shop owners to travel to Paris and make copies of the exclusive dresses for them. Each of the business owners secretly agrees with him. Once in Paris, however, the clothes are so well protected that Sherwood and Lynn cannot get to them.
Lynn learns that Oscar Baroque - one of the most famous fashion designers - always gets his ideas from old costume books. Lynn imitates this way of working and Sherwood signs each design with the name of a famous fashion designer, then they sell the designs to the New York business owners. Meanwhile, Sherwood is forging further plans, because he recognizes in the so-called "Duchess" - the companion of Oscar Baroque - his old childhood friend Mabel from Hoboken . Sherwood now has the fake duchess so in hand that she convinces Oscar on his orders to design the costumes for a music revue with her in the lead role. Sherwood then wants to copy them. In addition, he opens the large fashion house Maison Elegance , which is to compete with Baroque's business.
Lynn is disgusted with Sherwood's constant scams even though she actually loves him. She considers leaving him for the piano player Jimmy, who is in love with her. Lynn believes it is only a matter of time before the police arrest Sherwood. And indeed, Baroque discovers the copied designs from his collection, which Sherwood sells in New York. He is arrested while Lynn is leaving for Jimmy. Sherwood asks for an afternoon at liberty to put everything back in order. He attends the wedding between Baroque and the "Duchess". Sherwood reveals the true identity of his newly married duchess to Baroque, whereupon he drops charges against him in order to avoid a scandal over the false duchess. Sherwood then sells its Maison Elegance store to Baroque. He can also convince Lynn at the last moment to return to America as a couple with him - he has to promise her, however, to stop the scams in the future.
