The Man on the Path is a German homeland film from 1923 by Wilhelm Dieterle based on motifs by Tolstoy . The main actors in this silent film were Dieterle, Alexander Granach and Emilia Unda .

The film was Dieterle's first directorial work. The young Marlene Dietrich appeared in a supporting role . 20 years later the two of them worked together again in the 1944 Hollywood film Kismet .

action

A shoemaker and his wife become parents of a young daughter, but nobody in the village wants to sponsor them. The landlord also refuses any support. That's when the shoemaker met Michael, who was walking through the village. He agrees to sponsor the little girl. Michael stays in the village and lives with the shoemaker's family. When the landlord dies, the rumor spreads that the shoemaker killed him with poison. With Michael's help, however, his innocence can ultimately be proven.

Production notes

Dieterle wrote the script based on the themes of the stories What people live on and The godson of Lev Tolstoy. The film was shot from late April to mid-May 1923. The exterior shots were made in Schleswig . The Mutoscop-Atelier Berlin-Lankwitz served as the studio. The premiere took place on June 12, 1923 as a screening for interested parties in the Alhambra , Berlin.

criticism

The critic of the Film-Kurier speaks of a "beautiful film that one would like to wish the best success on the way". And Dieterle is also certified as having "a happy hand" on his directorial debut. The representation of the ensemble is "good, heartfelt and cordial" and "Dieterle himself as Michael - that is a good exemplary cast that must be warmly welcomed".
