Ernst Gronau (born August 21, 1887 in Memel , East Prussia , † August 11, 1938 in Hörnum , Sylt , Germany ) was a German actor .

Life

Gronau had attended grammar school in his East Prussian hometown of Memel and then went to Paris to study at university for several years . Back in Germany he attended the “Reichersche Hochschule für Dramatic Kunst” and also took acting lessons from Rudolph Schildkraut .

Gronau did not appear on stage for the first time at the age of 23, initially as part of a tour with Schildkraut. His first permanent engagement took him to the Münchner Kammerspiele in 1911 . In 1913 Gronau went to Berlin, worked in the following almost two decades on a wide variety of theaters, for example " State Theater ", "Theater on Saarlandstrasse", " Theater am Kurfürstendamm ", " Berlin Theater " and " German Theater ", occasionally also as Director at the "grandstand". After his last permanent engagement in 1932, he received no more stage engagements.

In 1919 Gronau made his film debut, the following year he received one of the two leading male roles in Robert Wiene's drama Genuine . But soon he had to be content with supporting roles, in the sound film his tasks were reduced to batch format. He made his last appearance in front of the camera in May 1937: Gronau played the title character in the short film Der Musikant von Dornburg - it was to remain his only lead role.

Gronau died of a heart attack on Sylt in the summer of 1938. A small obituary read: "He was an interesting artist - a master of the episode."
