Roswolsky's Beloved is a German silent film drama with Asta Nielsen and Paul Wegener in the leading roles.

action

Mary Verhag is a no longer very young choir singer at the Grand Revue Theater, to whom men's hearts fly to. Lots of guys want something from her, but even the theater director and the bandmaster are rebuffed. Above all else, Mary wants to have a career and have more money, but not in this way. She is at war with her colleagues who are jealous of her popularity, and so one day the theater director intends to fire Mary. Her financial misery, which reminds her so much of the fate of her younger sister Martha, a poorly paid teacher, seems so great to Mary that she intends to take her own life. She stands on the bank of a river pondering whether to jump in.

At that moment, an elegant, large car stops behind her. A man invites you to take a seat in the back. The man's name is Eugen Roswolsky and he is an extremely wealthy industrialist. Roswolsky drives into a park in which his castle-like domicile is located. Mary is amazed and accepts the offer to move in with the millionaire. From now on she is considered Roswolsky's lover in social circles and suddenly receives unlimited credit from everyone and everyone. Mary takes full advantage of this situation. Even the theater director of her old venue suddenly wants her back and even offers Mary a leading role. But Mary does not last long with her benefactor. She falls in love with the explorer Baron Albich. But he holds back elegantly, he also believes that Mary is Roswolsky's lover.

The brawny millionaire with the big heart has actually fallen in love with Mary. He sees the baron as an annoying competitor whom he would love to be rid of. Eugen Roswolsky therefore goes all out and proposes marriage to Mary, who was just about to be arrested because of her high debt. She says yes, but only because the mountain of debt threatens to crush her. But Roswolsky realizes that Mary really only has eyes for Baron Albich, and so he lets her go. Roswolsky pays her debts and thus saves her from the law enforcement authorities. The altruist gives the young happiness his blessing on top of that.

Production notes

Roswolsky's mistress was made in the spring of 1921 in the Ufa-Messter-Atelier in Berlin-Tempelhof and passed the German film censorship on June 29, 1921. The five-act premiere was on September 2, 1921 in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo . The film was 1620 meters long.

Robert Neppach designed the film structures that were implemented by Jack Winter. Ludwig Kainer appeared as an artistic advisor.

For Asta Nielsen, Roswolsky's mistress meant a reunion with Max Landa , her permanent partner in her great film successes in 1913/14 , who, however, only played a supporting role here.

In 1928, Erich Waschneck filmed the same subject under the title “Scandal in Baden-Baden”.
