Fatty Arbuckle , the director, comedian, and discoverer of Buster Keaton , has a Labor Day party with friends at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco . The young actress Virginia Rappe falls seriously ill and dies four days later in a clinic. Through a number of circumstances, Fatty Arbuckle is charged with rape and murder. His innocence is finally proven in three trials, but his great Hollywood career comes to an end with the scandal.
