Vivian Blaine (1944)

Vivian Blaine (* 21st November 1921 in Newark , New Jersey as Vivian Stapleton ; † 9. December 1995 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress and singer . She gained fame through her role as Miss Adelaide in the premiere of the musical Guys and Dolls and its film adaptation Schwere Jungs - Leicht Mädchen .

Life

Vivian Stapleton was born in 1921 as the daughter of insurance agents Leo Stapleton and Wilhelmina Tepley. She made her first appearances on local stages in 1934, before appearing as a singer and dancer in various nightclubs such as the Copacabana in New York from 1937 . At the same time, Stapleton's stage name Vivian Blaine was created. In 1942, Blaine was signed to 20th Century Fox through her agent Manny Franks . Her first major film appearances include the comedy Die Wunderpille, starring Laurel and Hardy .

In 1945 she played the role of Emily Edwards in the music film Love Fair at the side of Jeanne Crain and Dana Andrews . Since Blaine had experience as a singer, she was allowed to sing her songs herself, while all other actors (with the exception of Dick Haymes ) were dubbed by professional singers, as was customary at the time. The title That's for Me , sung by her in the film and later published on Decca Records , stayed in the Billboard Magazine charts for four weeks and reached number six there. This happened in spite of a ban by the film studio, which forbade the actors to publish vocal recordings. Throughout her career, Blaine has appeared in a total of twenty film productions.

In addition to her career as a film actress, Blaine was also seen on Broadway in New York . She played her best-known role in 1950 as Miss Adelaide in the premiere of the musical Guys and Dolls there . She took on the same role in 1956 in the film version Schwere Jungs - easy girls alongside stars like Marlon Brando , Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons . Blaine's other appearances on Broadway include roles in Sorbas and Gypsy .

Since the 1950s, Blaine has starred in various television series such as Fantasy Island , Murder is Her Hobby and Love Boat . She had her last film roles in 1982 as Miss Daley in the science fiction horror film The Killer Parasite and in 1983 in the thriller I'm Going to Be Famous , before ending her acting career in 1985.

Vivian Blaine was married three times. Her first marriage to Manny Franks was divorced in 1956, and her marriage to Milton Rackmil in 1959 lasted until her divorce in 1961. Most recently she was married to Stuart Clark since 1973. Blaine died of heart failure in New York on December 9, 1995, at the age of 74 . Her grave is in the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla .
