Fantasy Island is the title of two American fantasy family series about a millionaire gifted with magical powers on a tropical vacation island. The role of millionaire was played by Ricardo Montalbán from 1977 to 1984 , and Malcolm McDowell from 1998 to 1999 .
The Original Series (1977–1984)
concept
On the tropical vacation island Fantasy Island somewhere in the Pacific (it was actually shot in California ) the mysterious millionaire Mr. Roarke - always cultured and dressed in white - welcomes his guests to fulfill their fantastic dreams; This, however, on the condition that they have previously paid 50,000 US dollars for their stay and leave the island after fulfilling their wish, but at the latest after three days. In one episode, however, Roarke also mentions lowering the price of US $ 50,000 for some guests if they cannot pay it, and some characters also win the trip in a competition.
Roarke acts as something of a psychological advisor. Upon arrival, the guests mostly harbor dreams of fame, fortune or youthfulness, while at the end of their trip they often gain self-knowledge and have learned to be content with “simple” interpersonal values. The German counterpart was the series Insel der Träume with Rolf Henniger , which was broadcast on ZDF in 1991 .
Always at Roarke's side was his assistant, Tattoo, who, besides ringing the arrival bell, took on numerous other tasks on the island. He seemed to be Roarke's best friend and knew a lot more - but by no means all - of his secrets. From 1980, Julie joined the staff of the island for a few episodes. The blond, young woman mainly took care of the wishes and dreams of the children's guests. In 1983 Hervé Villechaize and with it Tattoo left the island and was replaced by the British butler Lawrence, who embodied exactly the opposite character of Tattoo.
Each episode followed a similar pattern. After the announcement of the plane (or the balloon), Roarke and Tattoo (Julie / Lawrence) go out to greet the guests. As these arrive, Roarke explains the problem or concern to the person and already suggests difficulties or possible tension. This is where the guests come together for the first and last time. Now the two (sometimes three) storylines were told alternately in parallel. At first everything seems to go according to the person's wishes, but then difficulties arise or they notice that their dream is not developing as positively as expected. At this point Roarke usually intervenes in the process and suggests a solution. In the end, everything turns out to be good and the guests say goodbye overjoyed. Only in a few cases did anyone return to Fantasy Island.
With the success of the series, more and more stars from the American film and television business wanted to appear as guest stars on the series.

The follow-up series (1998–1999)
concept
In 1998, ABC decided to produce a follow-up series in which Malcolm McDowell now took on the role of Roarke - mostly dressed in black. This time it was clear from the start that Roarke and his staff had supernatural abilities. The series should score with black humor.
New characters were created, like the beautiful shapeshifter Ariel, who was also responsible for creating the magical worlds on the island. The series always began with people who by chance came across a mysterious travel agency and were offered a trip to Fantasy Island to solve their problems.
There were always allusions to the old series, but the earlier success still refused to come. Due to a lack of audience ratings, the series was discontinued after 13 episodes, so that planned, continuous storylines were not completed.
