Christopher Hewett (born April 5, 1921 in Worthing , Sussex , United Kingdom , † August 3, 2001 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) was a British actor . In German-speaking countries, he was best known for his portrayal of Mr. Belvedere in the series of the same name .

Hewett was tutored by Jesuits at Wembley College in his native England after his father died in a pontoon accident. In 1943 he made his first stage appearances in London's West End and also played minor roles in a few British films in the 1950s before he moved to the United States. There he was on stage for the musicals My Fair Lady , The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Kean as well as in the play Sleuth on Broadway . Under his direction, the 1960 Broadway revue From A to Z and the off-Broadway new production of the musical By Jupiter by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart were performed.

Probably Hewett's best-known film role is that of the extravagant homosexual theater director Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks ' classic comedy Spring for Hitler from 1968. Otherwise, however, he mainly worked as a television actor in the USA. From 1983 to 1984 he played Lawrence , the sidekick of the millionaire played by Ricardo Montalbán , in the final season of the Fantasy Island series . Immediately thereafter, he took on the role of Lynn Aloysius Belvedere - a British butler who works for a quintessentially American family - in the series of the same name , of which a total of 118 episodes had been produced by 1990. He then increasingly retired and was last seen in 1997 in the series Ned & Stacey in a guest appearance as himself.

Hewett was a devout Catholic , a Royal Air Force veteran, and a lifelong bachelor . He died at the age of 80 of complications from his diabetes. He was a descendant of the Irish political agitator Daniel O'Connell .
