action

Henry Holland is a shy bank clerk in London who has been responsible for delivering gold bars for years. Outwardly, he is meticulous and over-anxious, but he believes that he has developed the perfect plan to steal the bars and then flee. Holland got the idea when a new tenant moved into his pension. Pendlebury owns a foundry that makes useless jewelry. Pendlebury is also looking for a way to break out of his previous life.

When Holland is to be moved to another branch of the bank, he wants to realize the plan. Within a week, Holland and Pendlebury hire two crooks, Smith and Shorty, to help them with the robbery. The plan is simple but clever. Smith and Shorty are supposed to kidnap the gold wagon and drive to Pendlebury's delivery truck. The gold is worthless in the bar form, so it should be brought to the foundry, melted down and brought to France in the form of small souvenir Eiffel towers .

A small linguistic misunderstanding made the plan go wrong. The owner of a souvenir shop sold six of the gold towers. When Holland and Pendlebury arrive, they try to get the missing towers back. This also works for five of the towers. The sixth tower escapes them. Pendlebury is arrested after a wild chase through London. Holland is able to flee to South America , but is also arrested in the end.

background

Robert Shaw made his feature film debut in the film, but he was not named in the credits, as was the later actor of James Bond inventor "Q", Desmond Llewelyn . Audrey Hepburn was originally intended for a larger role, but her stage engagement meant she had to switch to a small role.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international film , the film was a "refreshingly cheerful crime comedy, which is a prime example from the post-war era of the British comedy, which is bubbling with ideas and full of dry humor, profoundly and at the same time lovingly caricaturing the honest petty bourgeoisie and his hidden dreams." "Hilarious" was the verdict of the film magazine Cinema .
