He was also supported with the Henry Wood Scholarship and the Bob Harding Scholarship , among others . These awards resulted in his being appointed Assistant Conductor of the Havant Symphony Orchestra and the British Youth Opera, and later conductor of the Ipswich Orchestral Society. He has conducted at festivals in Ashover , Lichfield , Newbury and Wraysbury .

Career as a conductor

In 1997 Rumon Gamba was invited to represent Great Britain in the International Masterclass for Conductors in St. Petersburg . And the following year he won the Lloyds Bank BBC Young Musicians Conductors Workshop in Manchester . He then received a position as Assistant Conductor at the BBC Philharmonic (Lloyds Bank BBC Philharmonic Assistant Conductor) and was later appointed Associate Conductor. He stayed with the BBC Philharmonic until 2002. From 2002 to 2010 he was principal conductor and music director of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra (Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands), with which he also toured internationally. Since 2009 he has been working in the same position at NorrlandsOperan.

In addition to this main activity, Rumon Gamba, who was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Music in 2002, has not only conducted most of the UK's well-known orchestras since 1998 - including the BBC Concert Orchestra , the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra , the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , the Manchester Camerata and the English National Opera - but has also worked as a guest conductor with many orchestras abroad. These include the Munich Philharmonic , the NDR Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg , the Orchester National de Belgique, the Göteborgs Symfoniker , the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Center Orchestra Ottawa, the New York Philharmonic , the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, Gamba has worked with all major Australian orchestras and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra . He has also appeared as a guest conductor with the symphony orchestras of Hong Kong, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo.

Gamba has conducted a number of world premieres, including 2005's Brett Dean's Viola Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Per Nørgård's oratorio The Will-o'-the-Wisps Go to Town with The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He has also tried Leonard Bernstein's musical / operetta Candide several times, for example in 2005 when he conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra in a performance of the orchestral version at the Royal Festival Hall , and in 2008 when he conducted a performance by the English National Opera at the Coliseum Theater London made its operatic debut.

Recording activities

Since 1999 Rumon Gamba has been making regular CD recordings exclusively for the British label Chandos Records . His new recordings of classic British film music , most of which he makes with the BBC Philharmonic, have gained international fame and attention . These include works by Richard Addinsell , John Addison , William Alwyn , Sir Malcolm Arnold , Georges Auric , Sir Arnold Bax , Sir Richard Rodney Bennett , Sir Arthur Bliss , Francis Chagrin , Brian Easdale , Ron Goodwin , Christopher Gunning , Constant Lambert , Lord Berners , Clifton Parker , Alan Rawsthorne , Mischa Spoliansky and Ralph Vaughan Williams .

The spectrum is very broad - it ranges from music for war films to classic comedies from Ealing Studios to the British productions of Walt Disney . Many of the selected pieces are first recordings apart from the original recordings for the film soundtrack. For this purpose, Gamba works with arrangers such as Philip Lane , since the original scores are mostly no longer available and therefore the film soundtracks have to be “listened to” with patient work. With his film music recordings, Rumon Gamba is following in the footsteps of Charles Gerhardt , who from 1972 made a significant contribution to the rediscovery of classic Hollywood compositions of the 1930s and 1940s with his film music records.

Occasionally Gamba also takes on composers who have written film music in the USA, such as Bernard Herrmann and Erich Wolfgang Korngold , of whom he recorded the music for The Lord of the Seven Seas ( The Sea Hawk , 1940) with the BBC Philharmonic in 2007 Has.

In addition, Gamba has also recorded a number of orchestral works by Malcolm Arnold as well as those by Eric Coates , Miklós Rózsa and David Matthews . With the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra he has also recorded orchestral works by Malcolm Williamson and Vincent d'Indy for Chandos .
