history

The founder of the New York Philharmonic: Ureli Corelli Hill

They are the oldest orchestra in the USA . The founder was the American conductor Ureli Corelli Hill . The orchestra is traditionally counted among the Big Five .

After the orchestra moved from Carnegie Hall to Avery Fisher Hall ( Lincoln Center ) in 1962 , there are currently discussions about the withdrawal to Carnegie Hall.

On records (especially the Everest label ), the New York Philharmonic appeared in the 1950s and 60s due to other recording contracts, sometimes as the Stadium Symphony Orchestra of New York .

The New York Philharmonic are known for their concerts as a political "door opener". For example, they played in Moscow as early as 1959 and 1976. On February 26, 2008, they made a guest appearance in North Korea's capital Pyongyang . Since this is the first appearance of an American orchestra in the Communist People's Republic, this appearance is already considered historic.

Trivia

After strong protests, the women of the orchestra were also allowed to wear trousers to concerts in 2018. The New York Philharmonic was the last of around 20 major orchestras in the United States to prohibit women from wearing trousers, except in exceptional cases. The ban on women entering the orchestra was lifted in 1966 for an assistant conductor to the Swiss conductor competition winner Sylvia Caduff .
