Alan Gilbert (born February 23, 1967 in New York City ) is an American conductor . He was chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 2009 to June 2017 and has been chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra since September 2019 .

Career

Alan Gilbert is the son of Michael Gilbert, who was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic until his retirement in 2001 , and Yoko Takebe, who is also a violinist there to this day.

He studied music at Harvard University , the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School of Music in New York with Otto-Werner Mueller .

In 1994 Alan Gilbert won 1st prize at the Concours de Genève . After completing his studies, he was Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnányi from 1995–1997 .

From 2000 to 2008 Gilbert was chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic ( Kungliga Filharmonikerna ) , of which he is honorary conductor today. In addition, he worked from 2003 to 2006 as music director of the Santa Fe Opera and from 2004 to 2015 as principal guest conductor of the NDR symphony orchestra in Hamburg . In this function he led the orchestra on several tours.

In the 2009/10 season, Gilbert succeeded Lorin Maazel as chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic. This makes him the first native New Yorker to hold this post. His term of office, which lasted until 2017, began with the work EXPO by the Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg , who was composer in residence with the orchestra from 2009 to 2012 . Since 2009 Gilbert has also held the William Schuman Chair in Musical Studies at New York's Juilliard School, where he teaches and directs concerts.

He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2014 .

On June 23, 2017, the Norddeutsche Rundfunk announced that Alan Gilbert would succeed Thomas Hengelbrock as chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra for five years at the start of the 2019/2020 season .

Private

Alan Gilbert is married to the cellist Kajsa William-Olsson, who played with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. They have three children and live in New York City and Stockholm.
