Jaap van Zweden (born December 12, 1960 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch violinist and conductor .

Life

Jaap van Zweden received violin lessons at the Amsterdam Conservatory . He began his active career in 1979, where he became one of the concertmasters of the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam at the age of 18 . He held the position until 1991. Afterwards he was a conductor in various European countries, for example touring with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and the Israeli Chamber Orchestra .

From 1996 to 2000 he was chief conductor of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra , with which he made concert tours to England and the USA.

He directed the Residence Orchestra The Hague from 2000 to 2005 and has been the orchestra's honorary conductor since then. Jaap van Zweeden has been chief conductor and artistic director of the two Dutch radio orchestras since 2005. He is a sought-after guest conductor of various internationally renowned orchestras.

From 2008 to 2012 he had contracts as chief conductor of the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra and as artistic director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra . For several years he was the best-paid orchestra conductor in the USA in Dallas, most recently for the 2015/16 season. In 2018 he became chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic .
