HET Symfonieorkest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HET Symfonieorkest is a Dutch symphony orchestra. Abroad it is better known as The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra . The orchestra's home is the Nationaal Muziekkwartier in Enschede . The orchestra performs in Enschede, Hengelo , Zwolle and Deventer , as well as in the province of Overijssel and in the Randstad .

Until October 2011, the orchestra was known in Dutch as the Orkest van het Oosten (OvhO; literally: "Orchester des Ostens"). In October 2011, the Dutch name was officially changed to match the English name. Since 2014 the orchestra has been called HET Symfonieorkest after a complaint from the "Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest" in Amsterdam.

history

The previous ensemble of the HET Symfonieorkest was the Twents Kamerorkest ("Twenter Kammerorchester"), an amateur ensemble that began in the 1930s under the direction of Klaas de Rook. In 1947 this orchestra changed its name to Twents Philharmonisch Orkest ("Twenter Philharmonic Orchestra").

In 1954 the orchestra became professional with the involvement of musicians from the Twents Harpsichord Ensemble and the Twente Chamber Orchestra and was called the Overijssels Philharmonic Orchestra ("Overijssel Philharmonic Orchestra").

In 1983 the Overijssels Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera Forum were merged. Both orchestras were merged under the name Forum Filharmonisch and operated in two flexible formations, one for symphonic concerts , the other to accompany opera productions. The two formations were put together for some large symphonic productions each year.

In 1994 the Opera Forum Filharmonisch was forced to reorganize, that is, the orchestra was greatly reduced (40 musicians left it) and became an independent ensemble under the name Orkest van het Oosten . The operatic part was also continued under the name National Reisopera , but without an orchestra. The “Orkest van het Oosten” had to make two opera productions per year with the “Nationale Reisopera”, other orchestras had to be asked for the other productions.

Chief conductor

Under the direction of chief conductor Jaap van Zweden, the orchestra made great qualitative progress. In 2010 the "Orkest van het Oosten" was honored with the Edison Award .

Jaap van Zweden was chief conductor of the OvhO from 1996 to 2005. From the 2006/2007 season, Jan Willem de Vriend was chief conductor. After an initial three-year contract, his position was initially extended until 2012, despite controversy over his leadership of the OvhO. De Vriend stayed for another five years. In 2017 he was succeeded by Ed Spanjaard as chief conductor.
