Twente ( Lower Saxony Tweante ) was a Stadsregio the Netherlands around the cities of Almelo , Enschede and Hengelo . It bordered in the east on the Lower Saxony district of Grafschaft Bentheim and the North Rhine-Westphalian Münsterland ( district of Borken ) in the neighboring Federal Republic of Germany , all of which belong to the European region EUREGIO . The name of the region is derived from the Germanic Tubanten tribe who inhabited this region until the 4th century.
Twente is the south-easternmost region in the Overijssel province ; the second region in Overijssel is Salland .
The Twente region is an association of 14 municipalities in Twente, including Almelo , Borne , Dinkelland , Enschede , Hof van Twente , Haaksbergen , Hellendoorn , Hengelo , Losser , Oldenzaal , Rijssen , Tubbergen , Twenterand and Wierden .
