Tubants

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tubanten or Tubanti ( Latin : Tubantes , Greek  Τούβαντοι Toubantoi ) were a Germanic tribe . Towards the end of the migration period , the Tubanten lived in the east of what is now the Netherlands in what is now the Twente region , as well as in what is now the German districts of Borken , Steinfurt (both North Rhine-Westphalia) and Bentheim (Lower Saxony).

In the reports of the historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus about the expedition of the Roman general Germanicus in 14 AD to northern Germany and the area of today's Netherlands, the Tubanten are mentioned as Tubanti . Together with the Usipeters and the Brukterians , they came to the aid of the Martians against the Roman troops and ambushed Germanicus in a forest ravine. Also in the year 308 AD there was a confrontation with the Roman troops who attacked the Brukterer under Emperor Constantine . The Tubanten were also represented in the Germanic coalition that came to the aid of the Brukterians.

The name Twente for today's Dutch region in the former settlement area of this ethnic group is derived from the term Tubanti . There is a Dutch newspaper in Enschede called Tubantia ( De Twentsche Courant Tubantia ). The name of the Tubanten lives on in the name of this daily newspaper and in the name of sports associations (for example that of the HVV Tubantia football club, Hengelo ). There was also a Dutch ship called Tubantia .
