To the north of the tourist village of Holten lies the extensive nature area Holterberg ( Nature Park Sallandse Heuvelrug ), where you can hike, for example from the small train station in Holten. Some parts of this area are only accessible to a limited extent as the habitat of the last black grouse in the Netherlands. There are several smaller factories in Holten. There are several facilities for tourists with holiday apartments and campsites.

Rijssen is a small town where old traditions are still alive. Even Lebuin (see: Deventer ) preached here 775 Christianity. Rijssen received in the early 13th century , the town charter . Until a few years ago, older women still wore traditional costumes . A relatively large number of the inhabitants of Rijssen are members of very Orthodox- Calvinist parishes. There are also several smaller factories in Rijssen. The once important textile industry is no longer important. There are also some forests around Rijssen that are ideal for hiking. For tourists there is a park with holiday apartments and some campsites.

On March 15, 2003, the municipality of Rijssen was renamed Rijssen-Holten .

Many residents of the city of Rijssen speak a local variation of Low German , which contains a relatively large number of Münsterland influences .

Rijssen is the location of the action in the story Het Grote Gebeuren by the Dutch writer Belcampo (Herman Schönfeld Wichers, 1902–1990), in which the process and events on Judgment Day in Rijssen are presented.
