Location and economy

The municipality is located south of Steenwijkerland on Zwarte Water. The Zwarte Water in Zwolle is connected to the IJssel by a canal . The Zwarte Water flows into the Zwarte Meer, a marginal lake of the Noordoostpolder , which was previously part of the Zuiderzee . The Vechte flows into the Zwarte Water .

Hasselt is only 10 kilometers from Zwolle. Genemuiden and Zwartsluis are about 5 km to the north, almost opposite each other on Zwarte Water. Hasselt and Zwartsluis have small ports with some industry. Genemuiden, a former reed or thatch processing center, still has significant factories producing mats and carpets. Water sports tourism is also important to the community.

history

Hasselt is since the 9th century detectable and received in 1252 the town charter by Bishop Henry I of Vianden . The city was a member of the German Hanseatic League about 100 years later . The trade went mainly over the Zuidersee. At the end of the Middle Ages , however, Hasselt's heyday as a trading town was over. Other, more conveniently located cities had let trade move out of Hasselt.

In the Eighty Years' War , the Dutch War of Independence, Hasselt played an important strategic role. First of all, Count von Rennenberg, Georg von Lalaing , had secured the cities of Overijssel, including Hasselt, for Wilhelm von Nassau . However, when the Count von Rennenberg moved from the Dutch to the Spanish camp in 1580, it was important for the Dutch to keep as many fortified places as possible. For several years from 1587 the Dutch troops in Hasselt were under the command of Johannes Corputius , who was in the service of Count Adolf von Neuenahr .

Genemuiden received town charter around 1275. A town fire in 1866 completely destroyed the old town.

Attractions

A small part of the nature park and wetland "De Wieden" (see: Steenwijkerland) is located in the municipality, directly north of Zwartsluis. Genemuiden has a large marina, Zwartsluis a smaller one. Hasselt has a town hall (1550–1615) and several old houses (1650–1800) in the city center. The late Gothic St. Stephen's Church (1466) is outstanding , with, among other things, ceiling paintings and a remarkable organ. The town is a place of pilgrimage (annually on Corpus Christi day ). For this purpose a new church was built in 1933 at the "Holy Place".
