Georg von Lalaing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg von Lalaing , also George de Lalaing (* 1536 in Hoogstraten , Province of Antwerp , Belgium ; † July 23, 1581 in Groningen , Netherlands ), Baron (later Count) de Ville , 4th Count of Hoogstraten , from 1577 Count von Rennenberg and Count zu Salm , was the Orange governor of the provinces of Friesland , Groningen , Drenthe and Overijssel in the northeast of the Netherlands during the Eighty Years of Freedom .

Life

Lalaing came from an old family from the county of Hainaut and was the son of Philip de Lalaing (1510–1555), 2nd Count of Hoogstraten, imperial governor in the Duchy of Geldern and knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece , and Anna von Rennenberg (* um 1521).

Lalaing joined the National Movement under William of Orange in 1576 , albeit without renouncing Catholicism. Wilhelm I then appointed him governor of all northeastern provinces.

It was not until the night of March 3, 1580 that Lalaing moved to the Catholic camp of King Philip II of Spain , which made Spain considerably more influential. This is known in Dutch historiography as “Verraad van Rennenberg”. He took up a position in the fortified city of Groningen and was not expelled until 1594 by the siege troops there, under the leadership of Wilhelm and Moritz of Orange .
