Ernst Casimir von Nassau-Dietz (born December 22, 1573 in Dillenburg , † June 2, 1632 in Roermond ) was Count of Nassau-Dietz from 1607 to 1632 and governor of Friesland , Groningen and Drenthe .

Life

Ernst Casimir was the fifth son of Count Johann VI. von Nassau-Dillenburg and Landgravine Elisabeth von Leuchtenberg . When his father died in 1606, his numerous sons shared the counties of Dillenburg, Katzenelnbogen, Dietz, Siegen, Hadamar and Beilstein among themselves. Ernst Casimir received the title of Count of Nassau-Dietz on March 30, 1607 .

When his eldest brother Wilhelm Ludwig died in 1620 at the age of 60, he took over his office as governor of Friesland. Five years later he also received governorship for Groningen and Drenthe and retained all of his offices until his death in 1632. Since he came of age in 1594, Ernst Casimir took part in the battles between the Netherlands and the Spanish and became colonel of a German Appointed regiment. He suffered a defeat at the Battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600, but later made it to the position of field marshal of the state army. With his cousin Friedrich Heinrich von Orange he took part in the campaign to liberate Maastricht in 1632 , where he died during the siege of Roermond.

On June 8, 1607 Ernst Casimir had married the Duchess Sophie Hedwig von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1592–1642). He had several children with her, but only two sons of them reached adulthood. The oldest was Heinrich Casimir I (1612-1640), who officially succeeded his father on June 2, 1632 as Count of Nassau-Dietz and governor of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. The younger son Wilhelm Friedrich (1613–1664) became Prince of Nassau-Dietz in 1652 and took over the governorship from his deceased brother in 1640. He is the direct ancestor of all kings and ruling queens of the Netherlands .
