Johann von Ligne
Johann von Ligne , Baron von Barbençon (* around 1525 ; † 23 May 1568 in the Battle of Heiligerlee ), came from the old, baronial family Ligne , who named themselves after the place Ligne bei Tournai , were count from 1547 to 1568 - later Imperial Count - von Arenberg.
On October 18, 1547, he married Margaretha von der Marck-Arenberg , sister of Robert III, who died in 1541 without heirs . von der Mark-Arenberg and became the founder of the third house in Arenberg . Both families were wealthy in the Spanish Netherlands and in the Principality of Liège .
During the unrest in the Spanish Netherlands , he sided with the King of Spain. As early as 1546 he was therefore awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece . In 1549 the emperor elevated him to the rank of imperial count (because of Aremberg ). From the same year Johann von Ligne was governor of the King of Spain in Friesland , Groningen , Drenthe and Overijssel and one of the military leaders of the Spaniards against the rebellious republic of the United Netherlands of the Netherlands . In 1567 he received command of 2,000 cavalry men and 1,200 on foot from the Duke of Alba . In 1568 he took the city of Damm, which Ludwig von Nassau had occupied. On May 23, 1568, he met the rebel army. He then came to the battle of Heiligerlee . The battle marked the beginning of the Eighty Years War and ended in defeat for the Spaniards. Johann himself fell in battle.
He was followed by his son Karl as Count of Arenberg, who was initially under the tutelage of his mother.
