Ludwig came to the head of the Geusen and was ostracized by the Duke of Alba in 1567 . He then fled to Germany , invading the province of Groningen from East Friesland in 1568 . Here he defeated the Spaniards on May 23rd at the Battle of Heiligerlee , where he lost his younger brother Adolf . On July 21st, however, he was defeated by Duke Alba at the Battle of Jemgum on the Ems .

Ludwig later fought alongside the Huguenots in France and invaded the Netherlands with their help in 1572 . He took Mons on May 25, but had to hand over the city to the Duke of Alba on September 19. He was also able to conquer the city of Bergen , which was captured by the Spaniards on September 6, 1572, and Ludwig was captured.

In 1574 Ludwig again invaded the Netherlands. However, he was defeated on April 14th on the Mooker Heide and, like his brother Heinrich , was killed in this battle .
